Not speaking specifically to the AR, though the same rules apply... A bad thing happens to barrels when they are bucked by a sudden force, namely the discharge. Harmonics and all that LaLa Engineer crap I never understood. Free floating a barrel allows it to vibrate independently of the rest of the gun.

Now there are gadgets these days that dampen the effect for free floated barrels that look something like a CVC Joint cover.

Does it make a difference? I personally believe it does. I experienced a 1/2" @ 100 yard improvement on a model 70 by free floating. Does the Donut thinging that looks like a CVC joint work? Ya, probably like copper bracelets cure arthritis

Does it matter on an AR? Unless it's a match gun, or doing match work? No.

2 of 3 of my ARs are free floated, one, a Varminter, will be doing some serious Prairie dog work next spring.
