well bear with me guys. i have been an avid handgun man for many years. not much been into hunting. i did some squirrel hunting and some deer when i was younger. but i havent in years. well i have a 14 yr old son who is wanting to do some next year. only rifles i have are 22's. so i am starting from scratch here. i have thought about buying a couple of 30/30's or 30-06. but i held in my hand today a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Round receiver rifle, 7.62x54R caliber. NOW THATS ME :D. i need some legal info tho. as far as i can tell 223 is the smallest deer rifle we can use??? and another prob i see is no fmj.. does anyone know where i can find other shells, or is this gun a no, no to begin with? and if size matters is a 7,8,9mm legal in a rifle similiar to this. like i say rookie hunter here, help a feller out. thanks in advance.

i have sent for my packet for my c&r license, but havent got it yet. i want one of these regardless if i can hunt with it or not. i cant buy them now(i bought 4 handguns and a shot gun last month, and so far 1 handgun this month) wife wont let me get anymore till after christmas. but if c&r isnt in by then i might would like a ffl in knoxville area to order me one or two of these if any of you are interested. found a place online 70 bucks a pop.. http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/c/c-r-guns/p/mosin-nagant-91-30-round-receiver-rifle%2C-7-62x54r-caliber-/cPath/290/products_id/1041. and they have diffrent ones higher prices. not sure which i want yet.

As far as the wife goes, I found that if I can get it in the safe before the better 1/2 sees it and get rid of the box and all, she don't notice. "Where did that come from?". ......."aw I've had it for a while and thought I'd clean it up." I think she is on to me.

You can use a Mosin as long as the bullet is not FMJ. As for your 14 year old a 30-30 or a 30-06 is fine he should have no problems shooting either one. A 223 is the smallest round you can hunt with. I have been hunting with the same Browning BAR 30-06 since I was around 12 so your 14 year old should be able to handle medium calibers and maybe some large calibers.

Hey looneeetunes, I'd try some of these. You may be able to find some locally. I use Hornady in my Swiss K31. I thought they made a round in x54r, but I can't find it right now.

Also, the round is legal (as Hunting101 said) as the bullet diameter is either a .308 or .310/.311. The hunting guide for TN says a centerfire rifle. A buddy has his 5 y/o hunt with a .22-250.
