Lithium batteries and Game Cameras

Take this for what you will but I was just watching Les Stroud and he said bears can smell Lithium batteries.  A black bear took one of his cameras and they found it about 100 yards way chewed on with footage they used.

He was in the Smoky Mountains when it happened.

Yes, it was one of his big foot shows, but I watched it just because it was in the Smoky Mountains.

I liked his Survivor man series but don't care for his Big Foot hunt.

I am sure it is just marketing or viewers but I think it hurts his image.

They can smell pretty much anything that you've touched. Not saying that they can't smell lithium batteries, but I believe they could smell the camera with or without.

I left my GPS laying in the woods (in the Smokies) some years back. When I went back to get it, it had been chewed on by a bear. I won't swear to it, but I don't think I had lithium batteries in it.

A magazine I got from my Dad had an article about a bear's sense of smell.  The comment was something to this effect...

You can smell the beans cooking over the camp fire from 100 yds away.  Your dog can smell them while they're still in the can.  A bear can smell the perfume worn by the lady who packed them in the can 6 months ago, from a mile away.

Not hard to believe, lithium batteries have an odor a human can smell.  I have my 3v batteries in blister packs and when I open them I get a definite odor that come out of the pack.  With a bears sense of smell so acute its not a stretch to see how they can pick up a scent but why they would want to get to them is beyond me.  Maybe its because its a different smell, or maybe its a mineral they need...who knows.
