States Where College Campus Carry Legal

You might want to take note that college campus carry is legal with a license in the following states as far as I can tell.  This list does not mean that the colleges can't ask people to leave.  You just can't get hit with a criminal weapons charge.  The states in bold border Tennessee.  It is legal to carry in a college as far as I can tell in about half the states.  There were a couple of states, such as Wisconsin, that I was not sure on.

The problem with a college campus is that it's not always clear when you're "on campus". I'm not even sure what that means.

My information is about 3 years old so take it at that....

 

I sent an email to the University of Alabama asking about carrying on campus.  I was more interested in carrying and leaving it in the car than carrying in the stadium.  I got an email from the PIO for the UAPD asking me to call him but it was OK to carry in most areas.   He said that the rules that govern students were different than the rules that govern visitors.   He said students were not allowed to carry per University rules but they really didn't have that much jurisdiction over visitors in this matter if they had a valid carry permit.

I didn't realize it was that many. Florida has been working on it since I moved here. I'm pretty sure you can keep it in your car and they are trying to pass full campus carry.

Yeah from what I understand, you can carry in K-12 schools and also colleges in Alabama.  The schools can ask you to leave, but if you have a license that is all that can happen.  If you conceal, no one is going to be able to ask you to leave and you are following the law.

 

We need to use this list of states in order to back changes to Tennessee carry on school property for people with handgun carry permits.  You are going to need someone who can relay the information to sympathetic legislators and get the backing of the NRA.  Show that these other states do not have problems with licensed folks carrying on school property.  I mean think, people complain about California gun laws, but you can carry in K-12 and colleges legally in that state.  That is one of the few bright sides to California.

While this information is correct, it is slightly incomplete. Since California is a May Issue state, the sheriff can and will place restrictions on the permit. In Fresno county, my in-law's permits said "not valid on k-12 school campuses." It may not get you arrested, but the sheriff will pull your license. And even you can still get a disorderly conduct charge. California cops are famous for that.

The enthusiasm for campus carry in Tennessee is about on par with Constitutional Carry.  Throw in reflex opposition from the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR), and it's a very uphill fight.  When vehicle carry passed, TBR made it very clear, that did nothing but remove the criminal penalties for carrying in a car.  They were quick to point out it's cause for firing employees, and expulsion for students.

I think if this was promoted as still allowing the colleges to have their no guns policies, but no criminal charges, it would stand a much better chance than making the colleges get rid of no gun policies.  Same thing for the no guns signs that people can get fined 500 bucks for.

When it comes to colleges, that would only be a benefit for the occasional visitor to campus, not the employees or students who have an HCP, but could still be caught up in discipline measures by the school.

A handgun carry permit's purpose is to keep you from getting weapons charges.  I think a bill to remove criminal charges for carrying on school property for people with handgun carry permits stands a much better chance than canning the ability of a school to have a no weapons policy.  It is a huge benefit to a lot of people because it is much better to get kicked out of school without a weapons charge than get kicked out of school WITH a weapons charge.
