Linux for a Laptop Computer

Recommended Posts

Linux Mint with the Mate desktop is my recommendation. I have the same laptop but have Win 7 on it at the moment.

Mint is based on Ubuntu, but works better IMO. I have Mint on my two desktops.

I've used several different versions: Mint, Ubuntu, Zorin, Slacker Puppy, XFCE, etc.  Linux Mint is pretty close Windows 7 in look and feel. So is Zorin, but I prefer Mint. I suggest you download the ISO of Linux Mint and try it. You can run any Linux OS from the DVD until you're sure it works with everything. It will be slower and you won't be able to save anything on your laptop so each new start, you'll have to reload your wireless ID, etc.

Once you decide which one to use, then install it. I have Linux Mint on a very old Dell Optiplex(?) desktop with XP. It works fine.

EDITED:  Linux Mint is more like Windows 7. Ubuntu looks a bit more like the Mac OS.

By the way, if you watch Groupon for deals, you can pick up a new 11.6" Chromebook for under $140 and install Linux on it to dual boot or swap by hotkey from one OS to the other in less two seconds. I have a 13.3" ASUS Chromebook with Ubuntu and a 11.6" Acer with Mint. The bigger ASUS was $149, I think.
