A student supporting RTKBA in a persuasive speech in my class today used the link above to support one of his main ideas. The chart was very useful and he did a good job. I had never seen this information before. The chart clearly shows that the overall aupply of guns (not "access to guns" but rather how many are "in circulation") has no relationship to the level of homicides. In fact, its an inverse relationship -violent crime has gone down while the numbe rof guns in circulation has gone way up.

The student also pointed out the ECONOMIC influence of murder rates. There is a close correlation between bad economic times and the homicide rate. (Great depression and '70's recession being two obvious examples on the chart.)

The obvious weakness here is that there may or may not be a relationship between number of guns in circulation and easy access by criminals to guns. That subtle yet important distinction I think was lost on the audience.

I can't vouch for the reliability of the website, but other than that it was a well-supported argument effectively delivered. The kid will get a good grade.

Interesting stuff. Thought I'd share.

Things to make you scratch your head.

I don't think ANYONE knows why the cycle of crime changes in the manner that it does.

I think its more than one factor and I think population pressure and societal mores have a factor as well..but I have no facts to back it up..just suppositions.

nice site though!

thanks Len
