Organizational Service Project

Reaching out to the TGO community to see if there is anybody who can help a member out.

I have to complete ten hours for an Organizational Service Project for my Organizational Communications class this semester.  Since I usually keep to myself, and haven't been in Murfreesboro all that long, I was hoping someone might be able to help me find an organization that can help me out.  I have to meet the following requirements, with the reflective paper being the hardest part for me to figure out in setting this up.

  • For this assignment, you must find a nonprofit organization (preferably off campus) and volunteer to help with an event, fundraising, services to clients, etc.
  • Ten hours of volunteer work is required, and the hours must be documented.
  • Student will keep a log of hours worked (signed by supervisor), to be turned in, with the reflective paper
  • The student will use the experience of interacting/communicating with the organization as qualitative information (management and leadership theory, and communication networks) in developing a reflective paper

I'm not afraid of manual labor.  I can also do admin/office work if there is an organization needing some help in that.  Finally, managing this with a full time school load, and a part time job will be the trickiest.  I'm available mostly during the days after 12:30 until before supper, and on weekends.  Monday through Thursday, I have to be back in Murfreesboro for work.

Around the Murfreesboro/Rutherford County area's would be best, but if there is some work I can knock out over a weekend, I'll drive to the Nashville or Chattanooga areas.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Check out "Special Kids" in Murfreesboro.  They're a fantastic organization and it's a life changing experience.

Look up your local soup kitchen, food bank, church, Habitat for Humanity, various homes for abused kids (or adults), Big Brothers Big Sisters, etc.   There's plenty of opportunity.

I've volunteered at our local Second Harvest Food Bank a couple times.  I've never seen that much food in one place in my life.  Over the course of a few hours, we repackaged more than a ton (literally) of food from bulk to individual servings.  I found it amazing that a handful of people could move that much food in so little time.
