Just pitiful.  Stroh's Brewery tours in Detroit were free.  And, you could skip the tour and just spend the time in the tap room.  :D

I went regularly, saw the plant once.

Stroh's has gone out of business but it wasn't my fault.

I'd gladly pay $10 to get to not have to go to Detoliet and drink JD instead in Stroh's.

Thanks for sharing, glad to hear this. I've heard the county Jack is in is dry so it's nice they could loosen the noose for a (rather large) local business

Does this mean they hand you a fifth to drink while making the tour?

Your being silly, they uncork a barrel and you fill your cup :)

If the county is dry, how are they getting around that? You are paying for the booze via the $10 fee, same as you would be paying in a store/bar.

Are they saying the free tour is somehow different than the $10 tour other than the booze?

Just how much sample are we talking for the $10 paid?

We did this about a year or so ago and I believe we got approximately 5 different shots (i think they were half shots or maybe even less).

The wife and I did it 5 or 6 years ago also. I loved it. Picked up 3 commemorative bottles while we were there.

You wouldn't survive there! ;)

We went there a few years ago too. I'm pretty sure they have two tours you can take: the free one, or the longer one for $10 and you get a sample.

They explained the loophole of how they are able to sell the samples, and commemorative bottles in the store, but I've forgotten exactly how it works. Regardless there is a legal loophole. Don't expect that you are getting some fantastic deal there either. It will cost you the same, if not more because the bottles are commemorative, than it would for a similar sized bottle at your local package store.

We went for the weekend and stayed at a B&B, but that was way too long. We did enjoy relaxing at the B&B, but you won;t find a whole lot to do there. There is the distillery, at which you can spend a few hours. Down town has a few gift shops, and a restaurant or two, but not much else.

The tour guide said that the county will likely be dry forever because it takes a certain population density to vote on overturning the prohibition, and the town / county is so small they will never be able to reach that number of residents.

And I would gladly spend the gas money to make the drive to Detroit and guzzle Stroh's over spending $10 on the swill they produce in Lynchburg.

Amen! JD is too expensive to mix and too poor to drink straight. George Dickel and all Kentucky whiskeys are better.

I went and did the adult tour last month, it is well worth the money and
Everyone there doing those tours loved it, if you have not been to the JD you're missing one of the best free things there are to do on this world,

I generally prefer to stick to whiskeys of the Irish or Scottish variety. Bourbons just don't do it for me.
