Negligent Discharge, it could happen to you

So the guy that runs the "NFA Guns" page on Facebook had an accidental (negligent) discharge yesterday and is lucky to be alive. This post by his brother doesn't explain exactly what happened or who discharged the gun, but I thought it never hurts to take a minute for a safety reminder.

Been there. Done that. It's humiliating but also an eye opener. In my case it was caused by a lack of understanding for that gun and not an accidental slip of the trigger. Which is probably worse.

He may have tried to catch a falling gun. It could have also ricocheted like that cop in the elevator video recently.

Yeah it's puzzling. Possibly the worst case scenario, aside from one to the head. He's very lucky to be in the relative good condition he is.

I'd say it could be worse in some ways. At least he probably won't lose any motor functions or walk with a permanent limp(think knee wound).

But yes, he's very lucky to be alive.

If it was actually self-inflicted the most likely scenario would have been drawing or holstering in some manner.  Caught on a shirt or jacket or whatever and his finger hit the bang switch.

Not going to try and speculate on the how and why due to limited available information and unknown variables. What I will say though is someone's very lucky to still be alive and I'm not going to point fingers because stuff like that happens all to often. I hope he has a speedy and full recovery.

I used to think some of the safety rules were over the top until I took my concealed permit class.  Our instructor was retired LE.

 

The deal where the police shot the elevator - both the elevator and the locker rooms had plenty of accidental discharge dents.  He also told us about one of his colleagues who was practicing dry firing at a tv show.  He left and came back later.  He was mindlessly watching tv as he reloaded his gun and went on to shoot the tv.

 

Truth is this:  we are all human and humans make mistakes.  I live alone with a couple of pets.  I keep ammo well away from the guns and only keep my self defense shotgun loaded in the house.  Before getting my shotgun I used a VP9 for home defense.  I kept it in a holster on my bed stand in case one of the critters somehow figured out a way to pull the trigger.

 

Also, my hats off to the gent on this thread that shared about shooting himself - he took the risk of some jerk making nasty comments in order to encourage all of us to be more safe.

Some perfect person will still come along and tell him what an idiot he is - just give it time. I know I think about it every time I holster my XD. My holster, which I like because of the way it rides, is kind of a pain to get a gun into. Though the XD has the added benefit of a grip safety, making it more unlikely to have an AD, I will stop short of saying it will never happen. I hope it never does, but only time will tell.

I worry about it every time I do the mandatory finger spin before I slam my Hi Point into my tactacool leg holster lol. seriously accidents happen everyday and at least if you live thru it you can learn from it

My brother-in-law, who was the consummate firearm specialist and who introduced me to the world as a pre-teen, had a negligent discharge. While working at the car dealership where he was a mechanic, he looked into the trunk of his car to get something. Right there was his 25. As his workplace had a no tolerance policy regarding firearms on premise by employees, he attempted to put it in a rag to hide it. With anxiety of the possibility of losing his job and slippery hands, he dropped it and hit the ground, discharging. The projectile went into his leg above his kneecap, traveled up the side of his femur, and stopped at his hip.

He lived. He had pain, but he recovered without issue. His work even kept him on. This can happen even to the most safety conscious. It could be just the littlest thing that distracts us.
