This shows that republicans are not always supportive of gun rights.  Some people can't seem to understand that people with handgun carry permits are not the problem and that it is illegal to carry in this state without a permit.

"The committee avoided a vote on an amendment pushed by Gov. Bill Haslam, who opposes the bill. Earlier in the day Haslam said he had concerns the bill would allow guns in parks near schools.

Although the law prohibits any guns in parks used or owned by schools, the Senate passed a bill Monday to roll back part of the law. The bill allows guns on properties used but not owned by schools, such as athletic fields. A Haslam-backed amendment to the guns-in-parks bill would've made guns on any property used or owned by schools illegal."  (Lots of properties are used by schools, such as any place a field trip group goes to)

After Rep. David Hawk, R-Greeneville, quickly read the current law, Rep. Steve McDaniel, R-Parkers Crossroads, rescinded the amendment he'd introduced on behalf of the governor because he deemed it redundant.  (Why introduce a change to further criminalize people with permits?)

Those of you who have representatives who have had involvement in this park bill, ask them what in the world is the worry about people with handgun carry permits carrying anywhere?  It looks like this rep from Crossroads does not trust handgun carry permit people because he was about to modify the park bill to not grant handgun carry permits an exception.

Uh, possession of a handgun (regardless of HCP) is ALREADY a felony on any park property "used" by a school - there's an AG opinion on file to that end.  That was the whole intent of the Moody bill HB 0173 that this same committee earlier killed after its Senate companion made it through Sen Jud committee AND received approval on the Senate floor 25-6. Conveniently, the article left out that little observation...wonder how that happened??  I suspect that the attempt to add the Gov's amendment was an end-run around Moody's bill - because, had Moody's bill passed AND the parks bill be amended by the Gov's language, nothing would ultimately change RE carry on property "used" by a school...the GA wold have, in essence, removed the language from one statute and placed it into another.  Failure of the Gov's amendment likely spelled the final death knell to Moody's bill, as it was taken off notice first thing in House Civ Just Sub this morning.

Wonder if she has worked loose of the duct tape and got out of the closet yet...

Unreal! With a republican majority, you'd thought expanding gun rights would have been a simple task. :shake:

If you had a real Conservative Leadership group it would be one thing, but Haslam has shown that he is willing to put an iron foot down on "expanding gun rights", which in truth should be termed "restoring gun rights".

Till the current Leadership group which holds monetary sway on the big PACs changes, the little people will do what the Big Man says. Always remember politicians care more about getting re-elected than any other single thing.

This is SO true. We had all these rights until post civil war, so in reality we are restoring rights, not expanding gun rights-which is an oxymoron because rights are rights, if you expand them, you didn't have the rights in the first place.

I find it amazing that these people actually believe that posting a sign will stop thugs and criminals from carrying a firearm in these parks. It's like they would rather see armed thugs in parks than legally armed citizens.

I know this is probably a stupid idea but maybe the pressure needs to be put on the Iron Tennessee Dictator. Begin making our feelings know that if he has his eye on replacing Alexander in the U.S. Senate he might need the vote of Tennessee Gun owners to get it so he may want to become a little more Gun Friendly while he is our little Dictator...................jmho

No, see, he will simply appoint himself, the aged Lamar being of long tooth, he will drum up a bone in his leg, and voilà, instant Senator, no voters needed thank you very much.  Then, an incumbent stands a far better chance to be re-elected, and then the jump to Warp speed, the Presidency...

After MItchell and Fitzhugh offered up 11 different failed amendments trying to disembowel various aspects of the bill as previously amended in CJ, it did pass 65 Ayes, 21 Nays, 6 Present not Voting.  The PNVs:  H Brooks, Ramsey, Smith, Swann, M White, and...the illustrious Madam Speaker Harwell.  Your Republican leadership at work...

Now this is hard to believe!!! A democrat adds an amendment allowing HCP holders to carry guns at the State Capitol???

So the house will kill the whole bill because they are so afraid of the little people being armed. Okay sarcasm off. We need statesmen not politicians. I am starting to feel the republic is doomed because we have so many politicians that are only interested in maintaining their power at the expense of their constituents.

Yeah so what happens with this bill now?  Does it go back to the house floor for another vote?  Or will it have to go through the whole committee process since the amendment to carry on the capitol grounds was added?  Would we be able to carry inside the capitol building with this amendment?

Not hard to believe at all, in terms of wanting to torpedo and sabotage the whole thing...

EDIT: looks like I have to eat crow on this one... it seems like the senate called Yarbro's bluff and passed it with the amendment intact! Now back to the House... I think it will probably pass with the amendment intact, then we'll see what our "Rebuplican" governor is made of.

and there it is.......the democrat that added the amendment did exactly what haslam wanted him to do...He now has an out...IMO, he will veto the bill if it lands on his desk..

Then it will be high five's, cigars, and brandy at the haslam estate for all involved...

And another big fat wienie to permit holders...

Look at the vote counts - it is likely that a veto would be overridden.  Not something King Billy would like to have hanging around his neck.
