Hopefully they will be majority conservative. That's the question, lots of republicans voted for the bailout, that's not the type of republicans we need up there.

Yeah really. Keep in mind that the latest AWB proposal, still sitting in committee, is sponsored by 5 REPUBLICANS!

I had heard tonight that there was no way the republicans could take the house and senate in TN. I also heard a certain repub, NRA backed TN state rep. say he would not have voted for the "carry in rest. that serve alcohol bill". Made me want to vomit. He will not get my support next time he is up for election.

Tennessee Republicans win slim majority in State House

Mumpower declares GOP has House majority for the first time since Reconstruction

By Ken Whitehouse, A.C. Kleinheider and Clint Brewer

11-04-2008 11:15 PM —

Tennessee Republicans are again going against the national grain, winning a one-seat majority in the State House.

State House Minority Leader Jason Mumpower told Nashville Post the GOP has won at least 50 seats in the State House tonight and control of the Tennessee General Assembly's lower chamber.

"We have won 50 seats," Mumpower said. "That is the majority." State Democratic leaders did not seem to contest the change in power late Tuesday night.

"It appears the Republicans have a one seat majority," Democratic House Caucus Press Secretary Addison Pate said.

The GOP winning control of the State House likely means the end to the long reign of House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh. It also could mean a turnover in the state's constitutional officer, many of which have openly campaigned for Democrats in recent election cycles.

The State House win for the GOP mirror Tennessee's political posture in 2006, when Republican Sen. Bob Corker won the only seat for the GOP nationally as the party was losing control of the U.S. Senate and House.

Democratic presidential nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama won a convincing electoral landslide Tuesday night nationally, but Tennessee did not cooperate. The state's 11 electoral votes went to GOP nominee Sen. John McCain as well as the State House changing hands. The GOP also built a true majority in the State Senate, giving the party control of the Tennessee General Assembly.

Republicans on the Hill and the state's media late Tuesday night were projecting the GOP won Senate contests in District 12 between Republican Ken Yager and Democrat Becky Ruppe and District 26 between Republican Dolores Gresham and Democrat Randy Camp.

It appears the GOP's third pick-up in the Senate will be through former Republican turned independent Sen. Mike Williams losing to Republican Mike Faulk by a narrow margin of less than 300 votes, according to network television return numbers.

In Republican lawmakers have been summoned to the State House for a likely press conference in anticipation of winning control of the legislative body.

"We have always known the House Republicans represent the heart and soul of Tennessee voters," Mumpower said. "We have seen that validated tonight."

"It was a tough night. When the party at the top of the ticket carries the state by 22 points or more it's expected that the results will translate down ticket. Especially in those areas where the margin at the top of the ticket was substantially higher," House Democratic Caucus Press Secretary Addison Pate said. "Democrats will continue to work on those issues that are important to working families: jobs, healthcare and education."

Outgoing State Rep. Phillip Pinion said a lack of support from national Democrats hurt the party's efforts in Tennessee. Pinion appeared to allude to a lack of presence in the state by Democratic Presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama.

"The top of the ticket lost it for Tennessee," Pinion said. "We lost strong Democratic districts basically due to a lack of support from the national Democratic Party. The state party put up a good fight, but without national help they were hamstrung."

HISTORY! REPUBLICANS WIN MAJORITY IN STATE HOUSE, SENATE, FOR FIRST TIME SINCE RECONSTRUCTION

Tennessee Turns a Deeper Shade of Red

NASHVILLE – Tennessee turned a deeper shade of red Tuesday as Republican victories in state legislative races increased the party’s majority in the state Senate and gave Republicans a majority in the state House for the first time since 1968.

For the first time since Reconstruction, Republicans hold a majority in both houses of the Tennessee General Assembly.

“The election of a Republican majority in the General Assembly is historic in its own right, and even more so given the strong Democratic tide across much of the country,†said Robin Smith, Chairman of the Tennessee Republican Party. “Our victories send a national message that Republican values still resonate with mainstream America. The power of a consistent conservative Republican message - low taxes, small government and respect for life - once again demonstrated its power to attract a majority.â€

Republicans held a majority in the state House for two years after the 1968 election, but had not held a majority in the state Senate since Reconstruction until the 2006 election.

“We are indebted to our great volunteers across Tennessee and to the people of Tennessee for this historic achievement,†Smith said.

We need to all meet at the Capitol and watch Naifeh move out of his office.

Come to think of it, I bet dollars to doughnuts he resigns before that happens.

This is probably the only good thing that happened tonight... but, it is certainly INCREDIBLE progress. Good to know that the efforts many of us made, helped make a difference!

Thank you to everyone who voted!!!

Good news for TN but will it matter now?:usa:

We've always thought that if the pro gun bills that were killed in subcommittees by Naifeh and his hand picked munchkins could have made it to the floor for a vote by the full House, they would have passed. Now we'll see. This is going to be interesting.

Maybe not much. The best we can hope for is that the dems in federal positions remember '94, write us off as a bunch of hicks, and just decide to leave the states alone regarding guns.

That's a really BIG long shot.

After the socialists in DC kill states rights it probably wont matter, but it is fun to hear that Nafieh is history soon as speaker even though the idiot dolts in his district re-elected him. Bredesen is probably going to show more of his true colors and veto any gun bills passed by the state house and senate, probably got a burr in his britches from loosing democratic majority.

We'll see. I have a feeling that the lefties in DC know how divisive gun laws are (see the '96 election) and if we are actually active (not just posting on gun boards) about our rights and our state's rights, we can keep them in check.

I know it seems like a long shot, but it isn't - we just have to be as passionate about our rights as our opposers are about taking them away from us...

I am pumped! I saw the Obama win coming but this one blind sided me. I will be emailing my rep Susan Lynn first thing today to congratulate her on the win AND ask her to make the Restaurant Carry bill a priority.

Bye Bye Naifeh:taunt:
