Vehicle transfer & car registration question

Recommended Posts

Posted

I reviewed information on the DMV and County Clerk websites and I'm uncertain as to the answer so I wanted to run my situation by you guys that might know for sure.

Facts;

  • About 4 years ago I transferred the title of one of my vehicles to my adult son using the "Relative Transfer" process.
  • He will now be transferring the vehicle back to me again using the "Relative Transfer" process.
  • My son is buying a used vehicle from a dealer.

Questions:

  • On the vehicle being transferred back to me, can the car license/registration remain with the vehicle and be transferred to me?  (I'm thinking no but please confirm.)
  • Assuming no on my first question, I believe my son can transfer his current license plate/registration to the vehicle he will be purchasing, correct?  (I'm thinking yes but please confirm.)

I just did this with my son, and the tag remains with the owner of the vehicle.  You can do the retitling and registration at a satellite office.  You do not have to go to the Howard office building.  It sounds like I will be doing the same exact thing you did in a few years when he is ready to upgrade.

Use his tag to get it home and then give it back to him. He can take his tag to a satellite office, along with his new tag for a refund, and transfer the old tag to the new vehicle. I am assuming this is a specialty tag or vanity plate.

Thanks.   No special tag, we're just trying to legally pay as little to the government as possible.   :)

He can take either tag and get a refund, but it will be no more than a few dollars.
