Been a member since I turned 18. I have also paid the initial dues for friends and family so they can see the light as well. It makes a excellent Christmas gift.

I was one of those that would be a member during Democrat Presidencies, and let it lapse when a Republican would get it.

I just fixed that error with a Life Membership.

This was a tough election season and the NRA I know spent a ton of money on ads all over the country. You can see most of the ads they ran at www.gunbanobama.com. Some have wondered why they didn't run any Obama ads in Tennessee. Simply put, IMO Tennessee was in the win column all along. Think about it, where do you want the NRA to spend the donations you send to the ILA/PVF? Oh and by the way, membership to the NRA does not help them in election efforts. All media must come from the PAC. Membership dues cannot be spent on election media. Also thanks to the laws the NRA cannot solicit money for that PAC from outside their membership.

But, back to the point where would you have them spend the millions they spent, in Tennessee where you could feel good, or in swing states where there was a chance to make a difference? I think the economy and a weak repub candidate were too much for them to overcome, they did make a diff in quite a few house and senate races across the country.

Personally I want them spending their money where it can do good, not here where the pres and senate races were a lock and no serious house seats contended. That's smart, that's targeted.

So where do you stand? Is 35 bucks for a hundred or so 7.62X39 rounds more important to you than protecting your right to own the means to shoot those rounds?

Get the $10 associate membership (no magazine) and sign up your spouse and kid(s). You can have THREE members for $30. Numbers mean more to the politicos than what level of membership.

If you are not a member please state your reasons for not joining.

Here is a link to join up.

I will likely join very soon due to last night's election.

However, I have resisted for a while. In GA the NRA was not very helpful in getting some crucial state legislation passed. They had an agenda which was not exactly what "we" wanted. "We" tried desperately to get them to help us. They didn't come in until the very last minute once they knew they would also be getting what "they" wanted. Only then did they decide to help "us". They didn't want to push two (or join) two agendas during the same leg session.

You join the STATE RKBA group for local issues and the NRA for "national" issues. Keeping up with 50 capitals, a bajillion locals, and DC is too much for any one group.

I didn't think "...shall not be infringed" gives much wiggle room.

Maybe that's just me.

When facing an enemy with a stronger position (owns the courts) you can't fight to the end. Had the NRA taken your position we'd have been in front of a liberal USSC decades ago and the 2nd Am would have been effectively removed by judicial decree. As it is, the NRA waited and fought a rear-guard action until they had a) a USSC tilted our way and  a winning case. Now, we have Heller vs DC, a small, but significant block in the foundation of getting all our rights back.

I am not although I have gone back and forth on it. As a general rule I do not join organizations and certainly not political organizations. I am very opposed to any special interest or lobbying group that bears its influence upon government. If I am opposed to the existence of an anti gun lobby how can I not be opposed to a pro gun lobby. That would be hypocritical even if I believe in the same end goals. While the NRA has many purposes it is often focused directly on its lobby duties in Washington and at the state level and for that reason I can no bring myself to support it.

Where would we be if every gun owner shared your opinion?

I can see and agree with your point. But sometimes things aren't so black and white and you find yourself in a grey area. This is not a decision you have to make, but it is a decision that could affect you, me, the whole country.

It's kinda like this..

You are opposed to shooting bears, and you're equally opposed to being eaten by a bear. You find yourself with very few options, gun in hand facing a hungry bear. Sometimes you're better off to shoot the bear.

That is the most screwed-up and fallacious attempt at propositional logic in the history of humanity. :)

Nothing personal, but that has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. So you are saying its hypocritical to hate the anti-gun groups but stand with the pro-gun groups? I can't even fathom that. Then, how do you have an opinion on anything? Since everything has two opposing sides, how do you keep from being a hypocrite on ANY issue? Wow.

Nice..

Keep it simple for us simple folks. :D

Jason, I hope that helps you see things a bit more clearly. I myself had a falling out with the NRA because I didn't believe that they were engaging the ATF like they should have been. I have since reconciled. why? because a pistol is better than a stick and a stick is better than bare hands, when facing a rabid dog. the NRA is my stick.

Reading comprehension is a skill you can work on but it does take effort. I am opposed to any lobby group I am not opposed to a pro gun group and I am against anti gun group that is not being hypocritical. It is hypocritical to throw money at a Lobby Group and that is exactly what the NRA is when you are against any and all lobbyist and the system that is in place now. Eliminating special interest groups and lobbyist from our political system will not happen by throwing money at the one that happens to share your view.

The reality is I doubt we can get rid of the special interest groups and the money they use to buy votes. That is why I said in the first sentence of my previous post that I have gone back and forth on supporting the NRA. I can not simply abandon my beliefs that special interest groups are a bad thing.
