Need help wiring a motorcycle

Long story short, my best friend just got stationed here that I grew up with, and I told him I would help rewire his bike. A mutual buddy growing up cut all the wirings and ran it off a points system and destroyed the actual harness to say the least. Well, that guy was an idiot and now my buddy wants to wire it back to run off the stator and actually have the bike back in its original form.

I have a new harness, and have it about 40% done. But, there needs to be some custom stuff done on the wiring. Example: there isn't a key anymore, so I'm wiring in a hot switch and bypassing the key in the main cluster, but wiring the cluster to always be on when the hot switch is on. Pretty much making it run off a switch and not the key.

Anyways, is there anyone on here thats good with wiring diagrams? I'm pretty good, wired up my boat from scratch and neighbors land rover AC/Heat system as well, but it's always nice to get a little help with something like this, because it isn't my strong suit really.

The bike is a 1974 Yamaha TX500. I do have the diagram here and have been working off of it.

Anyone care to help?

Free beer and whiskey provided.

Cut the blue wir....err....I used to have a '74 Yamy 125. Have you been able to get ahold of a manual for the bike?

I've wired a few but it's been a long time.

No manual, not about to pay $80 on ebay at the cheapest for a beat up manual… The diagram is simple to read, just lots going on and nothing where it originally was intended to be.

Where abouts are you?

You're on the right track, if you've got a new harness for it I would wire it as new. You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time and a harness is the same way. Go slow and ensure your grounds are good!

Since it's a 74 it's probably under engineered, I has a 73 and the company did a half ass job of designing the system to run on electronic ignition, it wouldn't ha the itself because they didn't beef up the stator. I would look into that while you're at it. It's probably the reason the other dude cut the harness and went with points.

There is a reason for everything.
