HB 0995/SB 1171 Parks

Recommended Posts

Well, it was certainly pretty obvious from the KPD Chief's testimony in Nashville. ...

Ah, I didn't catch any of that. Hey, I count on you to report these things as they happen! ;)

Wish someone had been there to mention that folks have been legally packing for a year in his own parks and guess what, no mayhem, eh?

I don't think you realize that being middle of the road is probably best these days -- hence Bob and Lamar.

I'd think that if the "guns in parks" issue were decided by state wide referendum, it would probably fail.

If I had to bet, I'd go with him not signing it, just like the changes to preemption bill last session. That's the best straddle-the-fence strategy to hedge his bet.

It doesn't take a majority of people to give him serious grief about a veto, this is one decision that there are enough people for the bill to cause him grief if we choose to email him and remind him that there are enough who will refuse to vote for him in his future political career, maybe enough to cause him to loose for the first time in his career. You are right about, if the bill was open to a vote it would fail because the majority don't seriously think for themselves, they hear the media say, guns park bad, guns park bad and that's what sticks in their minds. That's why many of these clowns get elected in the first place, I figured Haslam would win the primary the first time, he had the money to put more TV commercials than any other candidate, all anybody heard about the election then was Haslam good Haslam good so they voted for him.

It's actually the cowards way out to let it become law without signing, he could claim to the anti's that he didn't support it, and he could claim to the pro's that he allowed it to become law. Chicken sh!t decision but I would rather he do that than a veto for our sake at least.

I keep my enemies close, so TN MoveOn.org is trying to get people to call Haslam to Veto the bill.

We need to all call in support and send letters asap!

The email I got.

Dear fellow Tennessee MoveOn member,

The Tennessee legislature just passed a terrifying bill to allow people to carry loaded guns in parks—even on the playgrounds where our kids play.1

If we act quickly, we can convince Gov. Haslam to veto the bill. He opposed guns in parks when he was the mayor of Knoxville, so we know he can be persuaded, but we have our work cut out for us because the bill is a big priority for the gun lobby.2

Can you call Gov. Haslam? Tell him: "Please keep our kids safe by vetoing the bill to allow guns in our parks."

Here's the number:

615-741-2001
Then, please report your call by clicking here:

As a MoveOn member in Nashville and the Tennessee chapter leader of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, I know that together we can stop this bill—and we must.

I grew up in the South and know about guns. I am a mother, grandmother, and former public school teacher. I dealt with guns in our schools in the '80s, lost two family members to guns, and have a close friend who was shot in the head at church.

I am not opposed to the Second Amendment but believe there are commonsense precautions we can take to keep our children safer—and certainly, that includes not allowing guns in our parks and on our playgrounds.

But the gun lobby is strong and knows how to get what it wants, which is more money from more gun sales. If you can believe it, lawmakers intended to pass this bill as a "welcome gift" for the NRA's annual convention in Nashville earlier this month—but activists, including MoveOn members, and our allies in the legislature were able to slow it down.3

Now we need to stop the bill by convincing the governor to veto it. We simply can't let people carry loaded guns in the places our kids play. Please join me in calling Gov. Haslam now.

On the webpage for the Governor's office, go to the contact button. There are a bunch of icons (Facebook , Twitter, etc.) which also has an envelope icon. That icon is the email link.

I emailed him as a Georgia resident who avoids Tennessee because of the patchwork of gun-free zones like the parks in question.

Nashville's libraries are not run by the parks department, so I'd say they fall under something else, at least here.

Yes, but are libraries considered "recreation"?

Okay I go to his websight, clicked "contact us", filled out the questions giving my email to subscribe and still there's no way to send him a damn email about what you want to say. Now I had better wait because i'm pissed off.

I was going to send this, not a nasty email unless he vetos the bill later.

Governor Haslam:

As a lifelong citizen of Tennessee, a conservative voter, NRA member and holder of a Tennessee handgun carry permit, I sincerely urge you to sign the recent bill to allow permit holders the ability to defend themselves and their families in local municipal parks in all cities in Tennessee. You have stated many times that you are a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I hope you will not be influenced by the panic that some have over this bill, as other bills allowing permit holders to carry in state parks, restaurants and other places have proven that there is nothing to fear from ½ million law abiding permit holders in the state. This bill allowing permit holders to carry in all parks will also prove that permit holders are law-abiding citizens who will act responsibly and according to the law. I also noticed that some far left groups like MoveOn Tennessee are trying to urge you to veto this bill, these groups only have a far left political agenda, don’t have the best interests of Tennesseans in their hearts, and besides it’s obvious they voted for your opponent and vote against every conservative candidate, for every far left candidate in state elections.

I ask again, please sign the bill into law, you will see in the future that there will be no problems with permit holders carrying in all parks.

Thank You.

Jon

If he veto's the bill he needs to be reminded that there are approximatly 500,000 HCP holders, in 2014 he only got 951,000 votes. There's alot of votes up for grabs, far more than radical socialist groups like MoveOn who wouldn't vote for a republican anyway.

The MoveOn.org message that JohnC posted makes me want to vomit.  Especially this line:

FIrst of all, 'terrifying'?  Really?  Only if you are an idiot hoplophobe who thinks that entering a park will suddenly turn people who otherwise safely and legally carry firearms in many, other locations on a daily basis into bloodthirsty mass murderers.  Secondly, it is already legal to carry in parks unless the local government opts out so this bill does not 'allow' people to carry in parks.  Instead, it disallows local ordinances that create a patchwork of laws.  Finally, it disgusts me when people claim to not oppose the Second Amendment and then follow up with crap like 'common sense legislation' that does just that - opposes the Second Amendment.

Getting the same thing, subscribe to his email list. NOTHING to paste an actual email to and send it.

There are catagories like, 'apply for an internship", "media contacts", but nowhere to paste an email to.

Using language to scare the EEEAKERS, and niave soccer moms, typical liberals. Also shows their blatant bigotry against permit holders as a group.

No case law on the subject, doubt it would be considered recreational unless it included an indoor play ground, slide or something else.

Emailed Haslam, not that I really believe that the opinion of a lowly voter will have any impact on His Highness' decision.  At least I let my wishes be known, though.

I know we generally want to keep emails to politicians short and sweet and I generally attempt to do so but in this case I just couldn't help but voice my opinion a little more thoroughly in what I hope and believe was a generally respectful manner.  This is what I wrote:

Governor Haslam,

As a Tennessee resident and voter I am writing to request that you either sign the so-called Park Carry bill into law or allow it to pass into law without your signature.  Tennessee Handgun Permit Holders are not criminals nor are we mass murderers waiting to happen and we do not appreciate being treated as such.  Being that the criminal element does not obey laws - which is the reason they are criminals - the only people impacted by 'no gun' postings and other, such restrictions are those who are otherwise legally carrying a firearm - HCP holders.  As permit holders, we have met certain requirements and undergone background checks in order to be able to legally carry.  We have done what we are supposed to do in order to be equipped for self defense should the need arise.  Stripping us of that ability simply because we might want to enter a public park is, frankly, unacceptable.

Further, many HCP holders legally and safely carry firearms in various locations in Tennessee on a regular if not daily basis.  The idea that entering a public park would suddenly transform these otherwise law abiding, conscientious citizens into raving killers is as unrealistic as it is asinine.

FInally, for years we in Tennessee were told that if we would only give Republicans control of the state government we would be rewarded with advances in gun rights restoration.  So far, however, it seems that we made more advances in gun rights with Democrats in control of the House and the Gubernatorial office.  Please take this opportunity to prove that you support law abiding HCP holders in action and not only in words.

Thank you,

read 'em & weep, gun grabbers.... it's a done deal.

I guess it's time to send Haslam a "thank you" note email on this one... whether he deserves it or not. Of course, it's highly likely that this is merely part of his plan to triangulate for a future senatorial seat, but that's another battle for another day.

At least it's done.
