Winchester Model of 1897

Came across a 12 gauge this morning at a local pawn shop that has been on my list. The action seemed to function like it should and serial numbers matched. The problem is the gun is very worn. Someone's abused the piss out of the finish on the gun. It even looked like it had electrical tape residue on the barrel. The stock was ok though.

 

What I don't get is they are asking 499 for this thing. I've seen ones in alot better shape for that same price. Just wonder what I could talk them down to...

I understand the SASS shooters use them, so the price may reflect some (perceived?) demand.  Winchester hasn't made one in a while..

I am sure you can get a lot better gun for a lower price.  I got one just 6 months ago for around $350.00

They're love/hate guns.  People love 'em or hate 'em.  They require a bit of tuning to run cowboy action.  They can be quite picky.

 

I don't like them at all.  Most of the time it's not noticeable but after a shot is fired, the slide must move forward a hair before it comes back.  MOST of them move that much from recoil.  Last one I had did not.  It was VERY frustrating.

"Love or Hate" is a good descriptor for the 1897 Winchester...still it's one of those iconic firearms you just want to own...

Prices in Pawn Shops are negotiable. I bet if they have had it a while, you could walk out with for between $300 and $350.

I've shot a 97 before and didn't really notice any problem shucking it. Just that it required a lot more force than a modern pump shotgun.

Last one I had was a Norinco clone. Shot well, better than the last real winchester matter of fact......but...if you have a high ride hold, that bolt will slice you like a razor blade. Not a fan of that at ALL.

I love the 1897, but Caster is right.  They call it the thumb buster for a reason.  Hold it incorrectly, and you'll never forget the lesson it teaches you.

I have a thing for old Winchesters myself.

 

Picked this one up last year as a beater and just finished it off a few weeks ago.

 

.  Barrel had been cut back but not even at all.  So decided to Cerakote it and cut the barrel back a little to even it up.

 

Color is Tungsten with small pieces in Black.

Barrel has been cut back to 18 1/2ish

Cleaned up the action a little and had a butt pad installed along with the barrel and chamber honed out.

 

Nothing like firing it off as fast as you can pump it.

I have shot my Norinco in matches since 2008 without any kind of a hitch.  NIB about $325 and I have shot literally thousands of shells through it.  Having a real Winchester is nice and some people do shoot them.  You couldn't shoot that Cerakote one in a match but if you could get it for about $400, why not get it and shoot it?
