Solo trying to fly solo.

Single engine, engine out, landed on a fairway and "walked away". Unless he ran it out of go juice, Luke and Leia have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. Looking at where he set it down, I would even understand the soiled britches.

Agreed.  He's a very accomplished pilot.  Engine failure immediately following take-off is just about the worst case scenario.  I'm impressed that he got it turned around and found a soft spot to put it down.  Those airplanes aren't very good gliders, I'd bet it was falling like a rock.

Yeah, I'm glad he was okay.
Mighta been a bad joke, but I thought it was funny, being as he wasn't seriously hurt. Kinda like watching your buddy fall and bust his azz. Once you know he's okay....you gotta laugh. Edited by Caster

Ford is a pretty accomplished pilot. He is also helicopter rated.

This isn't his first crash experience. According to the report yesterday, he had a pretty hard landing in a helicopter while practicing auto-rotation techniques.

Aircraft engines fail, its a part of the flight training regime to always be looking for a safe place to land, Mr. Ford did just that.

From what I read, that golf course is a designated emergency landing area. So it sounds pretty textbook, except for the plane sticking in the mud.

I was camping in the tetons, near Jackson hole back in 2001 I believe. Near a boy scout camp, one of the boys wandered away from camp and got lost. We were in the vicinity and saw helicopters buzzing over, turns out Harrison Ford was in his private helicopter flying over head and found the boy. Was kinda neat.

If you look at what was around there, he did a damn fine job. There were residential areas and public highways around there. The golf course was the safest place to put her down.

Yep, good situational awareness kept this from turning out a lot worse than it did ...

IMO, there are no "pretty textbook" emergency landings, things can go south far too quickly and every situation is unique ...
