It's called re- creating the scene. It happens at work ALL THE TIME. You have a work related accident, you don't get the person who got hurt to stand around for pictures, you send him to medical to get checked out. But it has to be documented, so you re create the scene later and take pictures of that for documentation purposes.

I'm not saying this particular incident is valid, but a combination of what has been mentioned in this thread already seems like it could have happened. A combination of a pistol with no external safety, a holster not designed for that particular pistol which did not adequately cover the trigger guard, and something was used on the leather to make it extremely flexible and pliable to the point of moving exactly where it didn't need to be. Several factors were at play here.

Soft holsters are fine unless you are moving around so much you need extra retention.  I agree with others in the thread who say the error is on the owner of the holster & gun...if the picture is real to begin with.

It most likely happened and that is a recreation of the scene. More than likely he was in the drivers seat anyways but they staged it on the passengers side to be more visible and easier to photograph

was the bullet hole in the passenger side seat staged?

As many have already mentioned it's and old story that really happened with all fault laying with the injured party who self reported his carelessness. A lot was made of the incident with lots of go kydex, horsehide or better grade of cowhide. All weren't bad recommendations of course but again as commented use the correct properly fitted holster which should be kept in good repair and replaced as needed. And yes the pictures were recreated after the incident so yes they are staged but as I recall it was a very bloody contact flesh wound. It could have been worse. You fellows so enamored of the AIWB carry mode are welcome to said carry practice, I'll pass.
