eBay turned on TN sales tax?

Prob the same time cell phone carriers started charging an admin fee for processing 911 , access, u fund and state tax fees for every subscriber. Complete bs if u ask me...
E bay the filthy rich sale of junk purveyor of all entities.
What pisses me of is everyone is on the charge tax bandwagon, we have elected officials scamming benefits for family members from State funds yet there is no driver education or driver training available for school kids, yet, more people die in mv accidents every year than we lost in the Vietnam war.
Yet e bay needs to collect sales tax on their crap.
It'll get worse before it gets better Sam.... Edited by Dustbuster

I bought some stuff a couple months ago and nada.  Tried to buy something from two different sellers in other states today and it popped up both times.  Guess I'll find a mom&pop online shop!

FYI: you can list any address you want in your online eBay account profile, and you can even create a second account with a different address. EBay should not charge you tax as long as the state listed on your account address is different than the state listed on the seller's account address, which is visible in every item listing. When did eBay start charging sales tax for every transaction now?

I guess today.  I bought an item yesterday and no sales tax.

Think eBay will ask PayPal to verify what state the account is linked to so they can see if you're trying to cheat TN out of their money? :squint:

Your eBay account address is not related to your PayPal account address, they can be different, and only the PayPal address is verified. So hypothetically:

Sam Smith creates eBay account #1 with a mailing address in TN, and links his PayPal account to it that also has a mailing address in TN.

Then he creates eBay account #2 with a mailing address in GA, and links the same PayPal account to it (with the TN mailing address).

When Sam buys an item on ebay from a seller listed in TN, he will only be charged TN sales tax if he buys it with eBay account #1. If Sam buys the same item with eBay account #2 he will not be charged TN sales tax regardless of how he pays through PayPal. Edited by wileecoyote

No, but eBay does report your total gross sales to IRS at a certain threshold, though I don't remember the amount. They announced it years ago, quite upfront about it, in the User Agreement somewhere.

PayPal may do the same, not sure, their TOS changes so often I haven't kept up.

Yeah I checked, a third seller and it was not asking me to pay that time.  I think these sellers may be starting to charge people sales tax and pocketing the extra money... because these weren't businesses I was trying to buy from and they were working out of IL & WY.

There will be some people made examples of. Ripping you off is one thing; but when they start ripping the Gov off they will turn the IRS dogs loose on them.

I believe Ebay owns Pay Pal now I think they purchased them a few years ago.
