USS Gabrielle Giffords - no kidding...

That may well be the ugliest ship I have ever seen.

I kinda like it, but then again I drive a Volvo 850. (They don't call them bricks for nothing.)

Stepping away from all the Gabby Giffords baggage are there any other navy warships named for women?

I probably should know that...

I don't know either, probably something in some class or other is. Hey, they're all referred to as "her" and "she" after all.

But your Volvo doesn't have bow like that! Or a gun turret that I saw. lol

The number of comments I could make that would probably get me removed from this forum...

That said, I know it isn't, but it should be an unarmed recon ship that is sent into hostile waters daily...

For those of us who don't do Facebook, and can't identify one boat from another, what type of ship is the one in question?

It is a littoral combat ship. They are 'stealth' ships.

3 ships by full name, but none are combat ships. The ships named with just the honoree's last name, I'm not sure. there could be some, but I can't tell by just knowing the last names.

USNS Amelia Earrhart (cargo)

USNS Mary Sears (oceonography)

USNS Sacagawea (cargo)

Are there other warships named after anyone whose service was generally unremarkable, and whose only claim to fame was being seriously wounded? I'm sure there are ships named after people who have been wounded or died, but they usually suffered from being extraordinary.

I slipped and fell while shoveling snow yesterday; do I qualify?

I don't get it. I don't care that she's a she. I care that she hasn't done much for the US Navy. There's always controversy surrounding the naming of a ship after a politician (at least half the population won't like it because of party affiliation), but in the past those politicians have had some form of service in the Navy and/or a long-standing record of support for the Navy. Giffords has neither.

But her husband does.

Then name it for Mark Kelly. A naval aviator who flew combat missions then went on to become an astronaut on 4 shuttle flights (pilot x2, commander x2). Yeah, I'd say that's impressive enough to have a ship named after you. That career shows a good public image for the Navy. Namings like that are usually done posthumously though, so he'll have to wait. They announced the USS Neil Armstrong (also a naval aviator before his NASA career) shortly after he died in 2012.

So when are they going to name a ship after Chris Kyle or Marcus Luttrell?

Oh we couldn't do something like that, why to glorify someone in the military?? Duh go figure, next it will be the USS osama!!

I can see it now. A giant ship equipped only with vacuum pumps. It can sail around the middle east sucking up to Muslims .

Austal

Austal is an Australian based global ship building company and defense prime contractor that specialises in the design, construction and support of defense and commercial vessels.

Our own Government can't even spend money at home on building our own ships it appears.

It is an incredibly ugly ship. I think the name fits her.

That entire class of ships have been a boondoggle and waist of effort and money, as they're not much more than a costal patrol craft. It's really to bad because the darn things are neither fish or fowl....more of a floating ...well
