Is TiN coating worth it?

That's the gold colored coating that's been put on drill bits for years.

If you've got a gun that you plan to put tens of thousands of rounds through and/or you use dirty ammo and just want to make cleaning it easier... maybe it's worthwhile. Or if you just want it to look purdy...

Well, I'm considering having my primary sidearm barrel done and having the BCG of my go rifle done.

I would rather have a NiB bolt than a Ti bolt but it doesn't look as pretty.

Like anything else there are a lot of places that do TiN coating (and other types). Some of the concerns are the temperatures used in the process. The TiN is not inside the barrel, so the wear resistance is for the outside. So if you shoot enough for wear to be an issue on the outside of the barrel; it will still be shot out.

Barrel replacement seems like a better deal to me should you ever shoot it enough for wear to be an issue; regardless of what treatment you go with.

Cleaning the outside of my barrels is pretty easy, so I don’t think ease of cleaning would justify it.

I’m not big on painting guns; but if I wanted to do something to a BCG; I would try Cerakote Micro slick.

I'm with Dave on this, I can't see the benefit over cerakote for the outside of a barrel and considering you can get a nitrided BCG from AIM for I think about $80, it kind of looses most of it's appeal IMO. 

 

I wonder what it would cost to get a barrel and BCG nitrided? Seems like a better process in that the inside of the barrel gets treated as well. I'd look into the cost of doing that, and then see what it would cost to have 2A micro slick the BCG and do up the barrel in whatever color strikes your fancy.

Unless they're masking the bore, the inside of the barrel does get coated with their process. The thickness of the coating is of no functional consequence.
