Question about applications for HCP ???

I had a buddy stop in the other day to check on my health and while he was here he ask me if I had heard anything about a new requirement to get a Hand Gun Carry Permit. He said that you have to file a request now in Tennessee for a number in order to get into a class. Until you get a number you cannot get into any class. I told him when I felt up to it I would come here and ask about it. So does anyone know about this and is it a true requirement or just a rumor????? :ugh: :ugh:

First I've heard of that, but stranger things have happened.  Could be just a local class fills up so fast that they issue the numbers for getting in.  Doubt that getting a number is a requirement to taking the class and getting your permit.

When you apply online you get a confirmation number for your application(you can apply before taking the course now, afaik), bring that number to class and it's used by your instructor to report your scores to the state. (Becomes your certification number)

I'm not in the know enough to be sure that it is a state requirement... though some instructors may not want to go through the old process if the new online application is as good as everyone's said.

It's the new system. Some instructors use it and others don't. I was one of the first couple hundred people that were run through the new system.

Basically, you do the online application first and have all that done and out of the way before you take the class. Then once you pass, your scores can be uploaded to the site the same day by the instructor. Once that is done, all you have to do is the fingerprint and $ part. Cuts the timeframe down to a couple of weeks from application to physical card.

Hope this helps.

I first got my permit 5 or 6 years ago and it only took 19 days, wife's was quicker by 3 days. I am wondering how this streamlines the process.

Kentucky just enacted this as well.

You can now apply prior to your course, and be approved/denied pending the course.

This is ostensibly to help applicants see if they can pass, or have issues to clear up before paying for a time limited certification.

And example would be someone that had a charge that hadn't been cleared up from twenty years ago, a complaint we hear about often causing someone to be denied a purchase at an FFL. If you have six weeks validity on your course, that you paid $100 for, and you had to wait two months to find out you were denied, now you have to get that fixed, then take the course again, at the cost of another $100.
