How to mount a handgun under a dash or desk

Recommended Posts

Here's an easy way to mount a handgun (or even a shotgun) under a table or desk.

Get a neodymium magnet with a countersunk hole in it, like these.

I use the ones that are rectangular 1"x1/2"x1/8" rated to hold 9 lbs.

Cover the magnet with shrink wrap, shrink it, cut a hole in the shrinkwrap over the countersink hole, put the rubber back, and use a screw to mount the magnet under the table. Then, pull the rubber shrinkwrap back over the head of the screw. (This keeps the metal of the magnet or the screw from scratching your firearm.)

Attach the handgun gangster style by the slide so you won't hit it with your knees. Alternately, you can mount it hanging down if that works better for your location.

One of these magnets will hold a handgun, but it you want it to be secure enough that your knee won't inadvertently knock it loose, you'll want to use a second magnet to make it a double thickness. The magnet does lose a little of its power when covered with shrinkwrap.  Whatever you do, don't run the screw completely through your dining room table! You might want to hang it without a round in the chamber until you're certain that it's not going to get dislodged by the dog or some other movement.

Great idea. It does work. Just remember that the gun is not secure, so you will need to remove and secure it anytime visitors or unauthorized folks are in the area. They sell more substantial versions of the same thing...

I took a paint stick, 2 magnets, and black electrical tape and made my own.  It can be done in 10 minutes. I keep a Bersa Thunder mounted under my coffee table that way we always have a pistol nearby when we're on the couch. I put it up when guests come over even though you can't see it.

I went a different route a couple years ago since my other preferred pistol is stainless & won't stick to a magnet. I simply took two screws & two fender washers & bolted one of my pancake holsters to the backside of our bookshelf next to the front door where I can access it instantly. I put the screws through the belt slots. The holster isn't damaged I have the option of using the thumb strap or not & no one can see it. You could do the same thing under a table.

As mentioned....  keep in mind that some types of stainless are non-magnetic.  Leaving the gun stuck to a strong magnet will make the gun itself magnetic over time.  Don't know that it would be enough to cause any ill effects, but in you might think it odd to see a paper clip sticking to it.

Are y'all using unholstered guns? I'm not a fan of not keeping the trigger covered.

I've though about using one of the kydex trigger covers with a lanyard. Then place the lanyard end underneath the mounting plate. So when you grab the gun the lanyard pulls the holster off. Yet when mounted the trigger is secured.

I feel the same way which is why I put the Bersa there. It at least has a manual safety so even if something(like my dogs) were to snag the trigger it shouldn't go off. If I had kids I would definitely do something else.

But yes, the Bersa is unholstered.
