Is there a way to check the status of my carry permit?

 

My wife and I moved here from Texas. We got our new drivers licenses and applied for the permit at the same time. We went to get our fingerprints done at the same time (on Dec 30, 2014).

 

My wife received her permit in the mail last week. I haven't received mine yet.

 

How can I check the status?

You only get a confirmation number if you applied online. We did it at the DMV.

You got your confirmation number online before you took your class. It should be on your certificate you received.

I don't have to take a class. If you have a Texas, Oklahoma, or New Mexico concealed handgun license, your license transfers directly to Tennessee. No class required. Just pay the fee and get fingerprinted.

Didn't know it was possible either, thought there were no deviations any more since they went back to the "all other states processed as original apps" about a year ago.

 

Doesn't make much sense really, since no other state's course would include TN law regarding carry/firearms, which is the brunt of the course itself. Even the military substitute hasn't ever made sense to me.

But I guess if your wife didn't take the course in TN but got her permit  ... then I guess the Texas course must be somehow TN "DOS approved" or whatever??

Per the TN Dept of Safety & Homeland Security site at http://www.tn.gov/safety/handgun/apprequirements.shtml (emphasis mine):

 

For Persons Holding a Handgun Carry Permit from Other States and Applying for a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit

ALL handgun permit applicants seeking a new, renewal, or replacement permit must provide
proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency.

If a person with a handgun permit from another state decides to become a resident of Tennessee, such person must obtain a Tennessee handgun permit within six (6) months of establishing residency in Tennessee.

All applicants, regardless of permits issued by another state will be processed as originals. The applicant must be twenty-one (21), complete the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit application, provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency, pay one hundred and fifteen dollar ($115.00) fee, and be fingerprinted. All applicants, except those with valid permits from New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas must take a DOS approved handgun safety course. Licensing requirements are not included in the reciprocity agreements between states. The mutual recognition of handgun possession privileges between states has not changed and is listed on this website.

All that being said, about all you can do to check on status is call the Nashville office. They've gotten a lot faster about getting them out in the last couple of years. My original, and also my first renewal, both took right at 3 months each.

All that being said, about all you can do to check on status is call the Nashville office. They've gotten a lot faster about getting them out in the last couple of years. My original, and also my first renewal, both took right at 3 months each.

I had to get a duplicate of mine and the party line is that they have 90 days to issue. It took me 60 days to get a duplicate. I think I called 5 times. However when my duplicate did arrive I got a second duplicate 5 days later.

Yeah, they've tweaked it again.  Glad I got here when they still honored a Michigan license.  I paid $50 and out the door I went.

 

Sounds like revenue enhancement.

Little follow-up.

 

I called them on Feb 11, and they said they never got the copy of my Texas permit from the DMV. They told me to mail a copy of it, along with my TN driver's license, to their office. I did that the next day (Feb 12).

 

On March 9, I called them again asking about status. They said they were still waiting on my handgun safety course certificate. i told them i don't need to take it, as I moved from Texas and have a valid Texas permit, and that I mailed them a copy of that on Feb 12. They stated they never received it. I asked if I can email them a copy of it and they said they aren't able to do email (in 2015???), but I can fax it. So, I faxed them a copy of my Texas permit and my Tennessee driver's license.

 

I just got off the phone with them this morning to check the status, and the lady I talked to said my file shows that my permit was approved on Dec 1, 2014, but hasn't been issued. She is going to talk to a supervisor about it now. It's certainly outside of the 90 day statutory limit at this point.

The permit office just called me back and told me that my permit is being issued today. I should have it in 10-14 days.
