Tenn. Lawmaker Proposes Second Amendment Tax Free Holiday

By Chris Cannon. CREATED Jan 29, 2015

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Tennessee lawmaker has filed a bill that would create a Second Amendment Tax Free Holiday during the first weekend of September.

State Senator Frank Niceley has proposed the idea to sell guns, ammunition and hunting supplies tax free during the weekend.

"TWRA dues are the highest, higher than any state around us, and they're wanting to go up again this year, so I thought, give our sportsman some tax relief and stimulate some business that weekend," said Senator Niceley.

The Republican from East Tennessee modeled the bill after similar legislation in Mississippi.

"As high as everything is, I'd say a tax free holiday would probably be something a lot of sportsman would like," according to Senator Niceley.

At the Nashville Armory gun range in South Nashville, one of the store's managers said the possibility of a tax free holiday would be good for business.

"It would absolutely be a great thing for any firearms retailer in the State of Tennessee," said Leroy Farris of Nashville Armory.

The price for many guns start around $500, not having to pay tax on that purchase could quickly add up.

"In Tennessee, with the average sales tax pretty close to 10 percent in every county, it would be a substantial savings," Farris said.

Louisiana and Mississippi currently have similar tax free holidays and they have created big business for gun stores.

"It has supposedly increased sales up to 600 percent and that's a substantial amount when it comes to retail, in any industry, much less the firearm industry," said Farris.

As it reads now, the bill would not have limitations as to amount of guns, ammunition and hunting supplies shoppers could purchase without paying taxes.

Senator Niceley said the fiscal note, or the amount of money the bill would cost the state, hasn't been determined yet.

Louisiana has had its Second Amendment Tax Free Holiday since 2009. Mississippi started it in 2014.

It would be a great thing for buyers and dealers as well. Save about $50 on a $500 gun, etc.  Be hard to turn that down,

especially if you're itting on the fence about buying one.

Will be surprised if this passes. TN will lose money, they don't usually cater to ideas of that sort, Ex: background checks $10,

 HCP, & so on.

Be interesting to see how this shakes out. The holding of breath is not advised. lol
