I think that folks who are well-off should be taking steps to use their resources to help out the less fortunate. I do not, however, think that they should be forced to do so. The entire point is that it's their money that they worked their tail off to earn, and they should be the ones who decide where it goes.

If I was really selfish, I'd be a big Obama supporter. I make a pretty meager salary. I haven't had health insurance since I went self-employed back in March. Raising taxes on folks making $250k a year is a long way from increasing my tax liability. And yet I oppose such taxes, not based on self-interest, but on principle. And I fear that is a foreign concept to many, many voters in this country.

What do you think "well-off" means to Obama? What makes you think the "well off" aren't using their resources to help out the "less fortunate" (more like lazy). ANYBODY in this country can work their way to the top.

Either you are a low expectation person or you aren't thinking beyond today. If you are self-employed and plan to do more than "make wages" you'll be in the highest tax bracket soon enough. BTW, anyone who thinks Obama isn't planning to raise taxes on anyone who's working isn't paying attention.

You are damn straight I am.

I do the job. I get paid. I keep what is mine. Unless I decide otherwise.

I have nothing against selfishness at all - if you earned it/made it/found it, it is yours, to do with as you bloody well please.

I have nothing against charity at all - if you earned it/made it/found it, it is yours, to do with as you bloody well please.

However, when it comes to other people (and most especially the government) telling me what I should and will do with my money... well, they can not only sit on it, they can also rotate.

I am quite aware that the well-off folks in this country do indeed use their resources to help out those less fortunate, and I'm not sure where you go the idea that I didn't think that. My point was this: Plenty of folks can afford to help out those in need. I would argue that doing so would be the moral thing to do. However, I would also argue that it should remain a personal choice to do so. Just because something is the "moral" or "right" thing to do doesn't mean it should have the force of law behind it.

I have every intention of improving my financial situation. But I'm not naive enough to believe that those intentions have a 100% probability of panning out. But even if I thought I had no chance of ever making a decent living wage, I would still be opposed to the Obama principles of taxation.

The point is that if I were selfish, I'd want to reap his promised benefits. But I don't vote based on personal benefit, I vote based on my principles. Sometimes those principles are in direct conflict with my immediate self-interest, but that's part of life.

If you ask me, the selfish people are the ones who are voting for Obama because they believe he's going to "take care of them." All they're thinking about is fixing whatever perceived or real issues they're having. I believe that the vast majority of these folks don't really give two craps where the money is going to come from to "take care" of them. And the ones that do, are just in the "tax those mean old rich people" boat. Because who cares about those rich folks? Hey, they can afford to pay more, no sympathy for them.

That, to me, is the epitome of selfishness. Believing that you have the right to someone else's money because they have more than you. Voting for the candidate who gives you the biggest handout, and not caring who's paying for it.

And that, IMO, is the biggest problem with the voting public in America today. People have too much trouble looking beyond their own self-interest, or not considering the fact that their personal beliefs don't necessarily need to be applied across the board.

Worse yet, these folks, in the traditional human manner, assume that everyone else is driven by self-interest as well. How many times have you heard Democrats assert that only wealthy people ought to be voting Republican? They seem to believe that if you vote Repub, you're either a rich ******* or a dumb, poor redneck who's been duped. It's like a foreign concept to them for someone to look at the larger picture or think beyond immediate self-interest.

As you might be able to tell, this stuff ticks me off something fierce. Sometimes I think I'm a lot more cynical than a guy in his twenties should be, but I can't really help it.

Carry on.

There's a shirt that pretty much sums up how I feel . . .

"Vote for Obama?

I work for a living--

WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?!"

In all honesty, I don't mind helping those who are TRULY in an unfortunate circumstance, so long as they are also interested in helping themselves, ie actively looking for a job and not having more babies on welfare . . . everybody else who simply doesn't WANT to work or intentionally lives far beyond their means and expects someone else to pick up the slack, yeah they can pretty much go f*** themselves, if they wind up on the street or can't feed their families, they have only themselves to blame.

For those that stated in the poll question response that they were NOT SELFISH per Obamas definition of the word, PLEASE post good mailing addresses so the rest of us can demand money from you.

I think a better question would be; When are all these cry babies going to get their a***s off the internet and do something about the problems they have?

Long before any of us were around, the Government has been taking portions of our money and doing with what they see fit. Socialism has been around long before any of us. All of a sudden it's become a huge issue? Give me a break.

No matter who's in office, money will be taken from SOMEONE, then handed to someone else who our elected officials deem more deserving. This has ALWAYS been the way.

Yes, I have a problem with this, but it's obviously not that big of a deal to me, because I choose not to do any more about it than the rest of you. And I assure you one thing, b******g about it on TGO isn't going to accomplish anything.

McCain's tax plan is no better than Obama's, no matter how you dissect it. In the end, one group of folks will have more money taken from them, and handed to someone else. It's just a matter of who's going to pay for most if it.

IMO, a fair tax plan is what we need. A plan where you keep all your money, and only pay taxes on what you buy. This way, it doesn't matter how much you make. If a person making $10,000/year decides to buy a new wide screen TV, they pay the same amount of taxes as the person making $1,000,000/year. In the end, the more wealthy folks will pay more taxes, simply because they generally spend more. If you can't afford it, you don't buy it.

No matter what the government decides, there will always be a group of people who are unhappy with the decision. That's just the way it is. Politics is like religion, everyone has their own opinion, and they are always deadset that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Their way is the best way, and the other way isn't even worth looking at. To me, one is just as annoying as the other.

I heard an Obama supporter say she wouldn't have to worry about putting gas in her car or paying the mortgage after Obama was elected.

She "made" me just about drive through a fence! How clueless can one person be?

Can't understand how someone that wont work for a living and depends on the government to give them a handout so they can still do nothing deserves my money. I work for a living and give to the less fortuate when I can, but if the government is truely concerned with helping the poor and disadvantaged, they should take a paycut and decrease the size of the government. They can then pass along the savings incurred from such actions to the disadvantaged. Instead they just fleece the public like always. So I guess I am selfish according to him.
