changing a 1911 hammer

so when i change out a 1911 hammer do i also have to change the sear out also and what else would need to be done ..

It depends on the hammer, and the existing sear.

 

Some parts are designed to "drop in"... while others, particularly the high-end stuff, is shipped deliberately "oversized" and will require hand fitting.

I would try just swapping in the hammer. Most times if anything needs to be fitted it is the thumb safety because of how the hammer interacts with the sear and the thumb safety locks the sear in place. Make sure you have plenty of dummy round to check to make sure the hammer does not follow the slide. And NEVER drop the slide on an empty chamber or the sear will be ruined.
