MARLIN 336 JM BARREL WITH BIRCH STOCK/FOREND - FINISH

I bought a like new 2004 Marlin 336 with JM stamped barrel with birch stock/forend with light brown walnut type finish. The Marlin Mar-Shield finish looks okay but doesn't look like it has a good clear coat finish over stain. What product can be used to toughen the finish and make a semi to flat gloss. I need something to add to existing coat, but not sure what to use. Will tru-oil added to existing finish make it sticky or smear the finish?

Anybody added any additional clear coats to a stock/forend for added protection? HELP.

Are you going to take it down to bare wood?

 

If so, varnish or shellack bare wood, then sand the surface.  Two or three reps of this will seal the pores.  Then a couple of coats of tru-oil rubbed in a drop at a time.  Good thing to do while watching TV.  Let dry a day between coats of tru-oil.

 

This is old school but works.  Inside the stock where it is fitted to metal, you need to spray a couple of coats of poly and let dry to seal the wood under the metal.
