Cleaning guns after shooting corrosive ammo

Recommended Posts

I've always been told that you should spray down the inside of the chamber and barrel of surplus rifles with something like Windex that has  Amonia in it. Supposedly it neutralizes the corrosive stuff. Then wipe it down with a wet rag and then clean like normal with regular cleaners like Hoppes and such.

I have never had a problem with this , but what do you guys do after shooting corrosive ammo ?

Dawn dish soap and as hot of water I can turn the sink up to. Clean it up decent with that in the sink, then air hose it off with the compressor in the garage and clean as normal.

I use WWII USGI bore cleaner.  The stuff is 72 years old but it was specifically designed for cleaning corrosive residue.

I run a few patches soaked with this through the bore, then clean as usual.

Bought 12 cans of it from another member here about 5 years ago.  I'm into the second can right now.  :pleased:

The window cleaner will actually clean out copper. Water (warm) is also good.

I have used Ballistol with good results. It can be diluted with water (1 to 10 ratio) to clean bore/chamber and then used full strength to complete the cleaning process.

Ok thanks guys. So it seems the warmer the water the better it disolves the "salts" and corrosive minerals from what I understand .

I don't know about that, but hot water dries faster than cold water, therefore lessening the chance of corrosion from moisture.

teapot full of boiling water and a turkey baster. Stab mosin in the ground with bayonet and run the hot water down the bore. clean as normal after

I'm gonna have to try this, just to scare the neighbors if nothing else. :)

Ammonia don't do squat. Th only thing in Windex that gets the corrosive salts out is the water.

Hot water. Hotter the better (up to a point). I made a funnel for my Mausers that fit the breech end with a hose and would pour boiling water through. Then clean as normal. Really hot water does two things, cleans a little better and dries more thoroughly after the barrel gets nice and toasty.

Never a bad idea to take a look see about two,or,three days after. One little speck corrosive salt missed and here comes Rusty.

Oil well, don't sweat over it. American shooters really obsess about this but the rest of the world has been shooting corrosive with little to no issue. Corrosive primers will store better than our non corrosive primers also. It's great ammo for stockpiling.

Thank you.

While ammonia does attack copper I doubt there enough in Windex to support the claim that it helps with copper fouling.

I normally just use windex, mostly because it is easy to spritz a patch with it then run it through the barrel, repeat a few times the clean as normal,  Never had a problem.

Exactly what I do.. Except I use a funnel instead of a turkey baster.

If you can't clean it right away after shooting corrosive, a good dousing with Whiskey Delta-40 will keep the rust away until you can get to it.

Don't fear the -40. Never had a problem with corrosive ammo when I use it. Then I clean with hot soapy water.
