My wife, 12 year daughter and myself fly from Nashville to Panama City Beach, FL last Oct.  I've flown many times, my wife twice but that was 20 years ago.  On the way, I was giving instruction of what to do and not do.  I said that since I was checking in a gun (my first time on commercial and not as military) I didn't want to be bothered with silly chatter questions.  As we headed into Nashville to meet with friends where I would keep my truck (I didn't want to pay $75+ for long term parking) my wife asked about some lotion she had out.  I told her to place in check bag and everything will be fine.

 

It wasn't fine, she didn't inquire the difference between checked bag and carry on bag and TSA took two bottles of lotion that were over 4 oz.  

 

As for myself and my gun....we were fine.

The total number is irrelevant...other than to ridicule idiots, something I'm a big fan of.  How many of those were purposefully trying to be snuck onto planes is the real and relevant question.

Saw that on CNN earlier. CNN was spinning it like these people were dangerous and trying to get on a plane with guns.

I almost walked into a courthouse with a gun.. Why? Because I carry it so much it is a natural part of me. People forget.

This is very frustrating. They found a "loaded .45" in a carry on at Tri-Cities this week. The media reported it and talked it up as a big deal. Gun was confiscated but no charges filed.

 

It's all about the rating. IMHO if it wasn't worth filing charges its not worth reporting on the 5:00 news.

The FAA reported that in 2012 730+ million people were flown in the U.S. and OP reported that 2,212 incidents of guns?  Hmmm, if my math is correct that is 0.0003%  or to put in something that is understandable, thats 3 PPM. 

 

Folks there are more dumb people that fly than that!  That number is low!

Very true, and not one of those found were used to cause harm. They were violating a rule, that's it.

There is no excuse for forgetting where your gun is.  That said I bet that every single case involved a legal gun owner that meant no harm to anyone and forgot that it was there.  I doubt that anyone would purposely try to get a gun onto a plane illegally.

After taking 14 flights in less than two weeks, I have to say that the TSA is lucky to even find their way to the airport. The inconsistency at which their machines and people can find stuff when it's packed the same is incredible. You gotta feel good about the security theater when the body scanner consistantly doesn't see the 3+ oz of metal that makes up your tactical belt (it's huge! http://www.thewilderness.com/tactical-belts/original-instructor-belt/) but thinks there's something hidden on your skinny arms where there is absolutely nothing. Or the pelican case that was packed exactly the same and it was a crap shoot if it set the machine off on needing to be searched. Security theater...and poor theater at that.
