My wife wants to buy me a Marvel Unit 1 for a decade birthday of mine coming up.  Just wondering about a couple of things before she hits the order button tomorrow or Friday.

Sorry buddy. I have no knowledge of these. But after a cursory look, I must say it is interesting. Maybe a little pricey for the guys like me who just plink. But for the serious 22 shooter...maybe.

I didn't see any mag comments on the pages I saw, so I assume it uses whatever 22 mag your pistol uses?

apparently the cheaper plastic Kimber .22 conversion mags work well with the Marvel. I inherited a Springfield Loaded I got running for a friend, he said, "Keep it, 1911's are like Trophy Super model wives.  Sure they look good at your side but do you really want to count on one when you need them."

So now I have the platform for a Unit 1. I haven't owned a 1911 for a few years.   If I could find a used Marvel Unit 1 I would probably go that route but I haven't seen one around for sale. I don't know how long the wait time is from Marvel yet, and don't see any being sold by vendors like MidwayUSA, etc.  I've always liked 1911 triggers and with a good conversion I might be able to hit a beverage can or two;) Tuning this rig up to fire both .22 and .45 gives me something new to fiddle with.

Just throwing this out there, but should you ever think about selling the Springfield, please think of me.

As far as the Marvel, if I go out today, I'll check with my brother-in-law and one of his friends. They always seem to have opinions on anything I've asked about.

Had the chance to borrow one with a threaded barrel once, I don't remember which gun I put it on but it ran flawless with or without a suppressor. If 22 ever gets back to normal I might get one of my own.

I had know that Bob Marvel had left Marvel Precision back in '03 and now has been with Nighthawk but lost track of his improved 1911 .22 conversion kit.  Even though the mags are proprietary I think I will go with the Nelson kit.  1st it is just as accurate, cheaper with threaded barrel, safe to dry fire, and has last shot lock back. Reviews are outstanding too.

Wow. After looking at those links, I'm impressed. Maybe I should get rid of my junk 22s and get a good Nelson unit.

Well, that's another to the wish list.

I have the Nighthawk conversion unit with the threaded barrel and it pretty much rocks!
You get the feel of the Nighthawk, the great trigger, and the suppression all in one!
Love mine

It is the same .22 Conversion kit as used in the full up Nighthawk.  I just got off the phone with Larry Nelson after ordering one of the kits to put on my Springfield frame.  Due to the success this conversion had at Camp Perry this year they are currently backordered.  The good thing is that you can essentially change the order up until the day before it ships if you want to. They don't charge your card until the unit ships.   I'm going to start with the basic kit and maybe later buy an optic rail.  I have some work to do on my 1911 trigger and hammer, but I have time before the kit arrives.

This the closest I found to a negative thread and hardly so:  http://www.targettalk.org/viewtopic.php?t=43120

I think the Nelson is the better of two good choices.  The Marvel units are great, but it's not often that you get someone as enthusiastic about customer service as Larry Nelson.

That alone is would likely seal my decision.

I have a commander length Marvel kit. I use it on a full size frame. It is very accurate.I use the GSG mags cause they are cheap and reliable .
