FOOD FIGHT: Alabama principal seeks cans of food to defend against intruders

W.F. Burns Middle School Principal Priscella Holley said in a Friday letter to parents that a can could stun an intruder "or even knock him out" until police arrive. Edited by TripleDigitRide

OK, it is an awful primary plan, but don't think that I'm not aware of every potential "tool" when I am in a GFZ.

-ever been hit upside the head with a 1lb steel can?   :)  I bet it makes changing a mag a little tough.  ha ha ..

... you're right though,... terrible that we are so passive and timid that some administrators advocate nothing more than this for a 1st line of defense.

**edit:  The bright spot in this is that someone is talking about empowering cornered, threatened students.  We may be in a sad state of affairs, but if you lay it right, any conversation about empowering students and faculty is a good first brick.

I'm I going to need a carry permit to buy a can of corn ;)

Not if it is preban.

Seriously this is insane that we have come to this. What is even more finny is they will not allow the kids to maintain control over cans of food. Those that made this decision probably liken the lethality of a can of food to an automatic weapon. Don't want kids walking around the halls with something so deadly. I bet they put the cans of food under lock and key so only responsible adults can have control over such a dangerous weapon.

"Don't worry kids, being able to think and act for yourself is a huge responsibility - too much for you to handle.  Simple items, such as canned food, can cause you to spontaniously loose your humanity.  We understand how terrifying this is, so  we will keep your humanity under lock and key for you, and you can experience it at pre-determined times with close supervision.  You are welcome."

I don't see any new problem. Society has been walloped by the stupid stick, we all know this. If anything I'm glad someone's doing whatever little is in their power instead of maintaining the par. AL won't arm their faculty, fine, nothing wrong with having a food drive though, and yeah, I'd absolutely take a can of ravioli into a gun fight over a big ole handful of nothing. YMMV. Maybe this will pave the way for other "non weapons" to be brought into the classroom.

And I didn't see anything pertaining to a ban on canned goods for students, all it said was that those particular cans will be stored away in classrooms, like they should. As pathetic as it is (and it is) that's the arsenal. It needs to be there, and it needs to be accounted for.

Thats Alabama for you!  Just like the tooth brush, had the tooth brush been invented in Tennessee and not Alabama, we would be calling it the teeth brush!

The problem here is, with the stupidity that runs rampant in public schools (where kids suffer disciplinary action for biting their pop tarts into the shape of a gun) rather than being a way to empower kids to at least defend themselves with something this will end up transitioning into more stupidity by which something that clearly isn't intended to be a 'weapon' will be added to the zero tolerance list.  In other words, as such ideas are incorporated and then the atmosphere of stupidity absorbs them, if a kid's mom packs his/her lunch and puts one of those individual serving cans of, say, fruit cocktail in the lunch box the kid will be expelled for carrying a concealed weapon.

Speaking of those individual serving cans, would they be the 'Derringers' of the thrown can scenario?  Would one need a Class III stamp to buy canned green beans by the case at Sam's Club?

I'm OK with the plan, as long as there are some restrictions. Such as, no one person should be allowed to have more than ten cans. I mean, really, who needs more than ten anyway?

Also, corn of any kind is OK, but never any of those evil Black Beans. Those cans only exist to kill.
