I think this was discussed before with, no offense to those living there, Memphis accounting for a large portion. Also a high report of domestic violence throughout the state.

Nashville is really high too.

I think Alaska's ranking has to do with their relatively low population by comparison.  There's less than 1M people in AK and the vast majority live in a couple areas.  Also notice from the article that the rate of violent crime in the Memphis area is 3x higher than the state average.

Crime is particularly concentrated in Memphis, where 1,656 violent crimes per 100,000 city residents were reported, the third highest among all U.S. cities. The poverty rate and other economic factors were also much worse in the city than in the state as a whole.

And there you have it....although it seems you hear about a shooting or two damn near every night in Nashville as well.

I just thought it was odd that Illinois didn't make this list. I guess the tranquility of the rest of the state makes up for all the homicides in Chicago.

I worked with a guy in Afghanistan who was based in Alaska when back home.  He said their meth situation was getting bad.  But like most things in that state, it tended to fly under the radar on the national level because of their distance and low population.

Also take into consideration in many cases Alaska is one of the states that many bad guys run to and hide after committing a violet crime in the lower 48. It is easy to hide up there with all the wilderness.................jmho
