Thoughts on buying a used truck

Finally!

My boy was reading Craigslist this morning when he read me an ad. Expecting me to shoot holes in his idea like always, he was taken aback when I told him to tell the guy we'd come look at it.

We had to skip church this morning to try and beat the next guy to it, but there it was.  2004 Toyota 4x4 with an honest 83k miles. No dents, no problems, and in his price range.

I was beginning to think it didn't exist. I guess patience pays off. Now to get forgiveness for skipping church..... :hiding:

I think you'll 'be ok with this one. It's not like you were skipping to go to a Titans Game.

It was taking care of family.

My son is looking for a reliable used truck. He'd like an extended cab and 4wd. As many as you see on the road, there sure isn't a big selection of them for sale.

He'd like to find one for less than 10k. All we've seen are either junk, or have new prices and high miles.

We keep an eye out on craigslit and golsn.

Do you have any other suggestions of places to look for one? This is starting to get frustrating.

Didn't read all commments

this time last year after about a year of looking I found a Ford Sport Trac 4x4 used.  4.0.

Most I found around 5k were junk.  I stepped up and started looking near 10k

I found one for 8.8k and got it for 8k

Been pretty happy with it.   Found a minor issue or 2, but still happy with it.

I finally got the chance to test the gas mileage on a road trip and was pretty impressed.

In town and with a 1 mile drive to work, I get like 15 miles per gallon.

On the interstate I found I got 25 mpg at 70mph, and 26mpg at 60mph.  I was happy with that.

The only thing I would do different would be to probably stepped my price up to about 12k and got a couple years newer and lower miles, but still very happy with my truck.  It has all the bells and whistles.

Yes, I think the used vehicle market will still take a while to recover, it ever, as far as good pricing on used. I know it's been about 8 years now, but the Cash For Clunkers program just destroyed the inventory of 3/4 year old good cars.

yup, after Cash for Clunkers, new cars got more expensive while reducing the used car market.

Thus driving the price of used cars up as well.

Much like .22 ammo will take years to recover.

I think in the next month or two there will be some good deals on all types of vehicles.  It's tax season and some people will start selling to pay Uncle Sam. :2cents:
