I Hate Roll-pins

I'm not a smart man, but I would think a spiral roll pin would be harder to get in than a straight one. :)

Edit: If I were up at 0128 messing with roll pins I'm sure I'd hate them too. Edited by BrasilNuts

Site shows that they carry spiral roll pins, but they're closed on Saturdays. Maybe one of their Knoxville locations is open today.

What size you need and are you going to be at the show today?

I crashed out and slept in - I  was not planning on going to the show today, but I need The one that goes on the forward assist.

I'll stop by Fighting Sheep Dog and see if they have one.

Will post any success (or not) that I have.

Sounds like someone invested in the right tools for the job...

I have the right tools.....well....no...I don't.

I have all the right punches & pin-holders, but with three bench blocks, STILL don't have one that correctly secures this receiver (a TGO upper) when I try to drive the pin from the bottom.

It's where I like all my peck-marks, like the new one last night when the pin expanded on me at the last .05".

Fortunately had tape on it, so minimal damage except destroyed pin.

Thanks!

Looks like the Knox stores are all closed today.

I'll drop by Oak Ridge on Monday if needed.  No real hurry.

We had a 50% success rate.  One fine, one split.

After searching on innertwebz, I had concluded that the spiral is more manageable than slotted, and is usually included on higher end parts-kits.

I can make do with either, and will double down on lube. Again.

With the right tools, which aren't real expensive, roll pins are a non issue.

I have -

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/363683/grace-usa-roll-pin-punch-set-7-piece-steel

and

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/251890/grace-usa-roll-pin-holder-punch-set-5-piece-steel

and for good measure, a set similar to these - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/360841/grace-usa-punch-set-8-piece-brass?cm_vc=ProductFinding

and a large  selection of hammers, & blocks (none of which I find suitable)

Add back in the R_Bert, and it becomes a non non-issue.

I have exactly this.

If you want to flip the receiver upside down (and beat from the bottom), it does not work.  Also, you can not insert a slave pin from the other direction.

BTW, this also will not work with the Wheeler AR-15 receiver lapping tool.  Lapping was a PITA using a clamshell block that did not fit well.  I ended up roughing it in on the vice, then hand-lapping the finish by holding the receiver upright and using the weight of the tool against itself.

The DPMS block gets in the way. The pins from the DPMS worked in the home made block.

I can see that being a problem. I guess I've been fortunate in that I've not had a problem with roll pins.

Well, I dug around the shop and found a 2lb box assortment of Brownell's pins.  None the size I wanted, but can cut down a longer version.

Don't tell anybody... you just need to put the forward assist roll pin in from the top, and just make sure you don't ding the receiver :).

Are the billets really in need of lapping? I know the forged ones have issues, but not billet uppers.

Probably not.

We are building two. One is a pistol, so we did not lap.  The .204 Ruger did get lapped, a large part in just to figure out how. I will say this, the finish that I lapped off was not completely uniform (but not bad).

For me, its a learning experience, but in retrospect, I would have left the TGO set in the safe and practiced on a blem from PSA.

But, even if I have to cover up a pinhead sized boo-boo (so far), it will still be an awesome gun.

I used the no Mar plastic version of that block and did two recently.

Pushed in the forward assist and inserted a smaller diameter pin (Harbor freight kit) that slid right in from the bottom to hold it in place, put in the block and tapped in the pin from the top till the slave pin hit the block remove slave and finish.

Even my son did one that way last week. Edited by Tobashadow
