Feeding issue on new AR build

Buidling my upper receiver tonight.  Got everything installed and connected it to the lower and put a mag in to cycle some rounds with the charging handle to see how it would feed and eject.  When I load the first round, bolt closes nice and smooth.  When I pull the charging handle back to eject the round, it seems a little rough, not as smooth as my other ARs.  When I let the charging handle go to release the bolt and load another round, sometimes the round feeds smoothly and sometimes it will jam up.  Just curious if there is something that I have done incorrectly? There have been a couple of double feeds also during this process....

I torqued the barrel nut per the instructions that came with the handguard and it is indexed so that the gas tube will properly fit through the receiver.  I have also checked to make sure that the bolt cycles and does not catch the gas tube while moving forward...smooth as butter.  The ammo I tried to cycle was federal xm855...not some cheapo stuff.  Anything I need to check?  Could it just be the fact that the gun is a new build and needs some action?  Just don't want this thing blowing up in mine or my wife's faces tomorrow at the range....

Thanks for any help you can give...

There's not really anything you could have done that would be dangerous. Go shoot it. Some guns, particularly new ones that need a little break in, don't like to manually cycle rounds. Lube it up and go see if you you have live-fire problems before you start troubleshooting.

I'll say that I have never had a rifle or pistol that would not hand cycle successfully run correctly with live fire using same components. On the other hand, I agree with the above, I haven't handled every gun in the world and you won't know absolutely until you shoot some rounds through it.

On new ARs it is very important to lube them up until they break in. Anodizing is very rough and when dry anything riding on it is like riding on sandpaper. And once you get 3-4 magazines through it the gun should run just fine unless there is another problem. I normally lube it to excess then shoot a few magazines through it followed by a good cleaning. Then after that you need a minimal amount of lube.

One more thing, while shooting if it starts to have problems I would give it a squirt or two of oil or even WD40. It tends to loosen the crud that can cause malfunctions.

Believer in that myself. All five of mine I had slinging CLP out the side along with the shell casing the first couple of mags.

Actually have initially soused up every new semi-auto, pistols too.

Welp, I am a grease guy. Lubed up the BCG, charging handle, and FCG. Ran 3 mags through the rifle with no issues. Checking some of the screws for make sure they held torque. Tried to get some kind of zero on my red dot, but was more concerned with getting on target and make sure I didnt have any malfunctions.

Feels great to build my first gun and it work without any issues. Thanks again for the help. Will try to post up some photos when I get back home...
