Looking for heavy, and CHEAP, jacketed 30 caliber bullets

I normally cast everything I shoot but I have decided I am going to shoot jacketed bullets for a while. I am needing something in the 208 to 230 grain range.

 

So if anyone sees any on sale please let me know.

 

What brings me to this decision is twofold. First, I want to keep my supply of lead for when I cannot buy lead or jacketed bullets. And second when shooting jacketed bullets out of my silencer it is quieter than shooting my cast bullets. I think that is because a cast bullet has lube grooves and that creates more flight noise.

Just a thought, what about a 30 cal mold with no lube groves?

I know you have a few molds, take one and cut the grove out of one hole in the mold.

I know you want to keep your lead, I will keep me eye out.

It can be done on a lathe, you have a 4 jaw chuck?

Make a mold?

Piece of round stock, cut in half, then pin it, chuck it in the lathe and drill it with a cheery you make.

I think they may be compressed metal powder rather than jacketed. Not sure.

I seem to recall them sending me a bunch to try out before. I did not like them because they are too light. As it stands right now I am thinking of designing another bullet.

Some mold maker does make a mold without lube grooves for paper patching.  LBT or Accurate.  Either could make one in any length/weight you wanted.

 

I assume you are going to PC the final product.  I can't imagine that grooves or lack thereof should be an issue of PC bullets.

 

You also might check in with Caster.  He has a fertile mind AND a lathe.

I thought this was a comedy topic! Cheap, heavy and .30 cal don't go together. You been in the eggnog too much?? Just kidding. Remind me about this in a couple of weeks, I am still moving and unpacking and haven't messed with my reloading stuff yet, I think I have some 220 grain bullets that may can be traded for.

Are you referring to the Missouri bullets? I had wondered if you could get them to feed right. I got all excited and was going to order some, but then decided not to because I was afraid they will be hard to seat deep enough and work in an AR magazine.

If you modify the magazine they will generally feed reliably in an AR. Next time I order some I will send you some to try. The guns that have issues with them, and most flat points, is bolt guns.
 
I did some more testing today and loaded the 245 grain MBC bullets over 4 grains of Clays. They will not cycle an AR but out of my Encore with a 16" barrel it is the quietest thing I have ever heard that shoots something. It is quieter than my slingshot, quieter than a pellet rifle and a clap is louder. Every time I shoot my can on my single shots I giggle like a little school girl. It is not as quiet out of an AR because of the additional gas needed to cycle but it is still pretty quiet.
 
I am going to try a potential solution to the AR gas noise. A lot of the noise comes out of the side of the bolt from the two vent holes. So what I am going to try is drill two more holes on the other side of the bolt and block of the original holes. My thinking is it will still cycle because all they are doing is venting gas as the bolt unlock but the gas being vented will vent inside the receiver to hopefully reduce the noise from the gas venting.

So far I cannot find anyone with an older carrier to sell cheap. That just means I will be drill out a new carrier I have.

Neat video. If you block those 2 holes and put holes on the other side I see how the right ear will get less noise. But the gas still has to go somewhere. Being crammed into the smooth bore of the upper, it can go down, or back. Back isn't going to taste good at all. I'm in visioning gas puffs coming out where the receivers mate, out the trigger hole and bottom of the magazine(worse than normal). Still, its worth a try. I've seen carriers on Ebay for like $50 if you need a guinea. It will definitely make for dirtier gun guts.

Another idea. What if you took a couple of these and cut the mass of the filter off flush with the actual fitting, making it shorter. I have used these many times through the years on fixtures and they work great for short blasts of air. Even when the bronze filter gets broken off and all that's left is whats inside the fitting. Which in our case is better anyhow. You don't need to constrict the gas flow, just shut it up.

I did some testing this week and figured out the noise from the side of the bolt carrier is not that loud at all. I put the tip of my silencer flush with the ground and fired a shot to muffle the report. The gun cycled and the noise level was pretty low. I still need to do a few other things to make sure I need to drill the carrier before I actually do. Another option could be to significantly increase the size of the vents in the side of the bolt. This would slow down the high speed gas without affecting reliability.
