Anti seize

After my experience with Aero, I am going to assemble my own upper. Question is, what would the best product locally available that can be used for the barrel install?? I've seen aeroshell mentioned online but availability has been limited. I would honestly rather just purchase something locally if the product will work just as well. Thanks for the info.

Moly or bearing grease from the auto parts store.  A brand without graphite preferably.

Always used lithium grease personally.

Whatever grease you have lying around handy will keep threads from galling. Don't go buy something special.

 

I hate that anti seize stuff. Get one dot on your finger, and you can paint a barn with it. It gets EVERYWHERE!!!!!!

This is so true, however you can not beat it for what it does. To seal a spark plug in a cast iron head you put a bit of grease or oil on the threads.

The heat will cook the stuff and seal the threads, yea the old gasket or the new taper seal works till the plug comes loose.

I use 2000* Anti Seize a LOT at work, it seals, will not melt out or cook hard.

It is what I used on my AR barrel, now I have only built one AR, but I work with ALU, stainless and steel all the time.

You know how easy it is to gall a thread with stainless? ALU is worse!

It is very easy, you think you are getting the nut tight and it has galled before you know it.

It is what is used on a Glock slide from the factory, and what I use after I give a bit of cleaning on all sliding and spinning parts.

Yes it GOES A VERY LONG WAY!

I have a tub of white high temp grease I lube my guns with so I guess I wont have to buy anything then...Thanks for the info guys...

I use belray dirt bike bearing grease. works amazing. and its waterproof :) or blue loctitie, depending on how hard i'll be destroying the gun and what type of rail is on it. like a delta ring that i know wont back off wont get loctite, but a MATEN monolithic barrel nut that has nothing holding it on (gas tube) gets blue loctite.

I lube with red high temp wheel bearing grease. But on my AR's the barrel and flash hider get Aeroshell which can be ordered for 99 cents a jar with free shipping out of Georgia for enough for twenty builds.

I just used some choke grease on a few and a just cleaned the threads of a few more. I've heard various things from various people regarding using loctite or grease on the barrel nut and it seems that the experts are in conflict.

I'd actually like to pose the question, has anyone ever used something they WOULDN'T recommend?

I wouldnt use the bearing grease, I would rather use the high temp anti-seize or lubraplate white grease, there is a difference with anti-seize, there is the regular that is silver looking and the extreme high temp that is copper looking, it is copper looking because it does have more copper in it, lubriplate is used when assembling engines on the main bearings untill oil starts to travel through the journels to the main bearings, so it has to tollerate high temps and lubricate at the same time.

I went to Bearing Distributors & bought some Loctite C5-A ... Label states that it is a copper-based anti-seize lube that protects metal products from corrosion & seizure to 1800 degrees F.  Good enough ?

The product data sheet says good up to 325F with 500F excursions.  So a couple consecutive mag dumps may cause it to break down.

This is what I use.....http://www.autozone.com/greases-and-gear-oil/lubricant-grease/coastal-moly-grease/561753/ ....there's enough in that tub to last a lifetime.....and it's cheap.

 

 

My understanding is it contains no graphite.  I got all bent out of shape about that when I was looking for some proper grease a couple of years ago after reading every thread on the interwebz and the potential for galvanic corrosion it may cause especially in a salt-water or marine atmosphere, you know, in case my operations lead me toward the coast.  :lol:

 

Mil-Spec calls for molybdenum disulfide (moly) grease (TM-9-1005-249-23).

 

As far as LocTite goes, I personally would not use any thread locker on a barrel nut.  There's no need for it.

I found a place online that ships the 33ms grease so I just ordered a tube to be safe so I didnt get the wrong thing by mistake. Hopefully they will get it shipped out in time for me to put my upper together over Christmas weekend...I appreciate all the input from you guys, you are all very helpful...

Just be aware that when the container says "high temperature" or "extreme pressure" or other such generalizations... they're exactly that, generalizations.  Pretty much everything referenced here says "high temp", but when you look at the specs that ranges from 290F to 1800F.  That's quite a difference.  The MSDS will tell you what's in the grease, unless it's some proprietary mix that they want to withhold as a trade secret.

I used Mobil 28 aviation grease (Geissele triggers) for my barrel/but.

I have a bunch of this grease available if anyone needs some.

my lord....16.00 buys ALOT of 33MS....expected a smaller container, but this thing is almost 12in long....i will be good on this grease for awhile....if anyone needs some...lemme know
