.22 Hornet advice

A couple of questions for the knowledgeable folks here:

-is there a model in bolt action for which I can get a custom barrel (if I could swap them myself, that would be a bonus).

-does anyone have experience loading subsonic ammo for this caliber? Could I get away with a 1/12 twist firing 62 grain bullets at subsonic velocities? I would like to keep the twist rate so that I can still fire lightweight factory rounds as well. The rifles I've seen have been 1/16 or 1/14 so I'm expecting to need something custom if it exists.

I'm interested in a project, if feasible. I have a lot (whole lot) of 55 and 62 grain bullets and I'll never load another 5.56 cartridge (no need to).

I'm not interested in single shot (TC or HR) type rifles for this.

Thanks!

Unless you have the knowledge and machinery to index and headspace a barrel, you will likely need to employ someone else to install it for you. I expect you can either buy a barrel for most any action suitable for a 22 hornet. If not, you other option would be to buy .223 rifled blank, and have a gunsmith finish it, assuming you aren't able to do it yourself.

There are several choices for donor rifles to get the action. I don't know your budget, but I'm not expecting this to be an inexpensive project.

I would suggest you contact Savage arms and see if they'd make you a barreled action to your specs.

Check out Jim Clark Custom guns:

Scroll down for the 22 Hornet info.  You can get a complete rifle, or send yours in for conversion with one of his barrels.  It might be worth a call to see what twist options are available and if he has any recomendations.  Also, perhaps any references worth checking.

No personal experience, but my brother is considering.  Looks tempting...
