44 Magnum commerically available ammo?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to get some 44 magnum and 44 special ammo and need some help with what everyone thinks is the best. Some cheaper stuff for plinking and some full power loads for hunting (most likely only deer but maybe a hog someday).

Also is 44 special good or better for practice? Any good for hunting?

As always price is a concern for the practice rounds but willing to pay a little more for hunting ammo.

Thanks

Phew... 44 is 'spensive!! If you've ever thought about reloading, 357 and 44 are two calibers that can provide dramatic savings.

As for your questions on factory ammo prices; the best pricing I've found locally was Georgia Ammo at gun shows and the Reloader's Bench in Mt Juliet. They also offer remans in addition to new stuff, and sometimes there are XTP loaded options. Short of that, Remington white and green box fmj is usually the cheapest.

Have fun and enjoy!

44 sp will cost more than the 44 mag.  check with freedom munitions and north georgia reloading/accessories.  freedom is most of the time sold out.  north ga has both 44 mag and 44 sp in stock.  i have used both companies ammo.

+1 on both companies.

Reloading is the only way to go, but if you're against that, Magtech is the best bang for the buck I've found. Save your brass for those of us who do reload.

FIFY

You wont save any money when you reload, you just shoot more for the same money.

I stopped at Academy Sports in Rivergate this morning and they did not carry 44mag. I did find 2 boxes at my local Walmart though. About $44 per 50 round box. 1 box of Federal hollow points 240grain and one box of Winchester 240grain soft points. I'm going to look around on the web trying to find some heavier loads to try. The Hornady XPT do look very good.

I have been planning on getting into reloading for a couple years now and just haven't. My wife did buy me a Lee 50th anniversary reloader starter kit for my bday this year so who knows this may be the year that I finally get started.

Wonder why the 44special is so expensive? I though I could use it to save some money practicing but wow its as much as 44mag.

44 spc is so expensive due to the fact that practically NO ONE shoots it, haha! I've never fired a round of it myself. If you get going with the Lee kit, you can make 44 special-ish loads in your 44 cases. I think my light 44 loads are something like 6 or so grains of a fast powder like titegroup, clays, or HP38/W231 and a 180gr cast bullet. Lots of fun!
