Ruger American Rimfire or 10/22

Title pretty much says it all. I'll be buying one soon and want some opinions. I have a .22 semi auto already, but the wife claimed it, so oh darn, looks like I'll need to buy another .22.

I was thinking of the American, because from what I've read, bolt action will eat anything and I have a variety of ammo from standard velocity to hyper. That plus the fact I will have to slow down to shoot, make it appealing.

My only issue, is I can't seem to find one for less than $250, and I can find 10/22's all day long for $170-200. Honestly either way I will be happy, but is the American worth the extra money up front? I will really only be punching paper or practicing with it. Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here.

I've had a few 10/22s.  I have two at the moment.  There is no part of me that wants to see either of them to get an American.  I might buy an American eventually, but it would be in a 22 mag.  I understand what you mean about it making you slow down when shooting, but if your getting it to have fun, it will be mighty disappointing when you want to rip through a mag on some steal plates.  You can obviously shoot a semi slower, but it also leaves you the option to shoot quickly.  As far as the ammo issue, lets be honest, you're probably going to be shooting mostly bulk type stuff whenever you can find it.  If you want to shoot shorts and sub sonic stuff, you can buy a mag to load shorts in the 10/22, and you just cycle the action by hand when shooting shorts or subsonic stuff.  That would make it not much different than a bolt action.  I've not shot a bunch of subsonic stuff, but I have shot the Aguila SSS, which cycled without problem. 

 

Bottom line is, if you don't have a 10/22, having had experience with several of them, I would say it a must buy over the American.  Just because you already have some type of 22 semi auto, that would not change my opinion.

Bolt actions will shoot anything, extracting is another matter...we're still talking .22's here.  As much as I love my Savage Mark II it's becoming a bit finicky in the extraction department.  Probably time for a thorough cleaning.

 

Nevertheless, I have no experience with the Ruger American but if your name is any indication of your trigger finger you might want to go for it.  With a bolt gun you have a little time to think before just randomly popping off shots.  There is the added bonus of using 10/22 mags.

I looked around on the net, looks like this is best deal I can see so far:  $229.95 + $10 Shipping, then you should be able to find a FFL that will charge $20 + $10 TICS, so that is a $269.95 OTD.  Buds in KY has them for $259, but you still have to get a FFL and TICS fee.  Check out Walmart, 20% off all guns this Friday, but you will have TN sales Tax + $10 TICS.  Good Luck.

Ha, so my name gives it away huh? Ya, I have been known to blow through a magazine in a few seconds. My other rifle is a Marlin 795, which honestly is an amazing little rifle for its price, but regardless, I've wanted a ruger for a while now and the wife decided for me.

One further issue I wasn't even thinking about before was the fact that having a 25 round magazine (let's face it, if I get a 10/22, I'm getting some) I'm going to shoot even more. I guess I was just thinking if I felt the need to do a mag dump I could just grab the Marlin.

Thanks for the info, appreciated. Ya, unfortunately, if i buy locally the tax drops the discount to basically 10%, and buying online is basically discounted with all the fees at the transfer. Kinda makes them the same price either way.

By buying online, your local guy should only charge you two fees, his FFL fee and the TN TICs fee $10.  If your experience is something different, then something stinks.

No you're right, I just worded that weird, sorry. basically $25-35 for both, depending on how far I drive, which basically negates any online discounts. Roughly ends up being the same give or take $10 which I'm not gonna cry over. Edited November 26, 2014 by spazz023

I've got both. My 10/22 has had waaaaay too much money spent on aftermarket parts but it's fun to shoot and I've never had a problem of any kind with it. My American is more accurate though. I bought the compact and I'm amazed how well the thing shoots. Can't go wrong with either one at the end of the day.

I own both and have owned many .22 rifles. Maybe 100+. I have friends who own many great shooting .22s. I think the ruger American rimfire is the best shooting .22 rifle this side of 600.00 or better. If you want a 1022 to shoot as well as the american you will need to rechamber the barrel and headspace the bolt and pin the firing pin. Edited November 26, 2014 by graycrait

I like a good 22lr bolt gun. The semi autos can be fun but for me a good bolt gun is much more fun.

Ya, I think I'm gonna stick with getting the American, members that own them seem to like them, and it just appeals to me for some reason. Now if this were close to me, I'd Just go for the 10/22.

I like a good 22lr bolt gun. The semi autos can be fun but for me a good bolt gun is much more fun.

 

Same here. I wouldn't get rid of my 10-22 but I don't shoot it much anymore because I'm shooting bolt guns in .22lr, .22mag, and .17wsm. I can't say why but I get more satisfaction out of the bolt guns. Maybe it's a age thing.

I recently acquired a Ruger American in 22wmr and love it.  The action was a bit rough at first but after 50 rounds and some oil, she's smooth now.  I put a harris bipod on it and a Nikon 2-7 and it is super accurate with CCI ammo.  Throw a suppressor on there and it is a sweet package.

Even after all of that I bought the 10/22. I couldn't find an American cheaper than 259.99 locally, so 20% off the 10/22 was just too good to pass up. The next one will definitely be an American though.

I have no doubt you will love it. I just mounted a "centerpoint" 3x9 in weaver base and rings on my dad's bone-stock, 30yr old 10/22. On a bench rest, my 13yr old nephew was shooting q-tips in half at 23yds. - couldn't miss.

using Primos "stix", I had no problem repeatedly shooting .223 shell casings at 25yds.

Before this last weekend, I would've said bolt gun, but an older 10/22 with a mint crown might be the ticket! Edited November 30, 2014 by Peace
