Well, I got me a M1A Scout Squad for an insane price that I simply could NOT ignore. It's been in layaway now for about 30 days and finally pulled her out. I've got 7 used surplus checkmate "restricted" mags, 2 new surplus checkmate "restricted" mags, 2 new commercial checkmate mags, and 1 dust cover, er I mean 10 rd mag. I've already got my optic picked out, which is a Nikon M-308 that I know I can get for a good price and have a line on about 4-500rds of Silver State Armory 7.62×51 168gr SMK. I've been working my butt off and it finally paid off. Can't wait to get her to the range and report back.

Nice dude! Congrats on getting out of the store and in to your hands. I'd like to have one at some point, but a lot of other stuff has to get checked off
the list first.

Only one?

Seriously though, nice pick up. I've been itching to have one of these after seeing a "SOCOM" model at a LGS. It will never happen though.

Bought one of the Scout Squad models when they first came out. It's one of my favorite rifles.
Mine has the extended eye relief scope rails. Never mounted glass on it though.

LOVE my Scout Squad.  It makes me wonder why they didn't just build the M14 with the 18" barrel to begin with.

I took the forward rail off (M1As aren't supposed to have optics  ) and dropped it in a USGI M14 stock and handguard... Awesome rifle.

Checkmate is the manufacturer, they're probably the best bang for buck mags out there, I got the used ones at Knob Creek for $17.50ea after some finnegling. Edited by whitewolf001

Oh ok that makes sense now. The Checkmate portion is what was puzzling to me.

Thanks

I wanted one until I found out they messed with the gas system on it and I've heard there are some issues that causes premature wearing on the bolt parts. I've never seen this myself but the scout squad design has a track record with the Seals, hence my choice for it.

Checkmate Beretta M9 mags = avoid like the plague.

Checkmate M14/M1A mags = as good a magazine as you're going to find.
