This week, Remington Arms Co. laid off another 126 workers at its factory in Ilion, New York, according to media reports. In August, 105 people were laid off at Remington’s plant.

Remington has been making firearms in the village since 1816, and at this rate, it will be interesting to see if the facility makes it to its 200th birthday in a few years.

The company employs about 1,300 people in Ilion, a village of about 8,000 people located about halfway between Syracuse and Albany.

Earlier this year, Remington announced plans to open a firearms plant in Huntsville, Ala., creating 2,000 jobs there.

Company officials indicated New York’s adoption of the Safe Act played a role in its decision to move manufacturing to Alabama. The Safe Act prohibits the sale of high-capacity, military-style rifles in New York.

In May 2013, the company was critical of the SAFE Act, saying on its Facebook page that, “We believe the NY SAFE Act is unconstitutional and was passed in a questionable fashion.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said the decision by Remington Arms to lay off workers was part of the company’s overall goals. “The layoffs at Remington Arms are a function of Remington moving to the state of Alabama and consolidating operations all across the country,” Cuomo said during a press conference at the New York State Fair in August.

Is the facility in Alabama up and running? Aren't they also expanding a facility in KY? I haven't kept up on this much lately.
Remington is a great American gun company; I wish them luck and will continue to buy their products.

It's impossible, it seems, for a democrat official to admit that their actions or laws passed have resulted in any kind of negative outcome in this country.

Well, I hate to see anyone lose their job but they certainly can't blame Remington. I hope Remington at least offered to let the employees move to TN and keep their job. I know it's not easy to pack up and move across the country though.

You are right. I think they have internal leaks on their neuron paths!

I hope Remington survives and just leaves a museum at the NY location. Edited by Ugly

Remington, Colt, and pretty much every gun manufacturer in the northeast, except for Henry for some reason, appears as if they will shortly be facing hard times if not already. I don't expect Colt to make it through this decade.

He is very correct.  But does he not understand the connection between the law he signed and Remington leaving?

He very well knows that his signing of that law caused Remington to make their decision but when have you ever heard a Democrat take the blame for anything negative that happens on their watch???.......................

Colt manufacturing hasn’t been a serious player for a long time. Colt defense still is. But Colt's own choices killed them in the civilian market; not the market.

Remington is owned by Freedom group. They make the most popular shotgun of all time and make the most popular bolt action rifle of modern times.

Marlin is also owned by Freedom Group and they pretty much have a lock on the lever gun market at this time.

Smith & Wesson is always at the top of the heap. Sales are good for them and they continue to give customers what they want instead of what they think they need. They are the most progressive firearms company in the world.

Ruger is off a little bit, but they are correcting course to what the market wants.

So with all due respect I don’t see hard times ahead for any of the American giants. The market is good at this time.

The reality of it is, he and the other liberal (socialist) progressives actually want these companies to leave their state, I really believe that with their mindset. That's okay with me if we here in gun friendly states reap the benifits of new companies and jobs. I feel sorry for those employees laid off and eventually terminated if they don't re-locate, i'm all for them applying for un-employment benifits in those states and running their stats up but I do hope they can find employment someday with the same pay and benifits, somehow I think those employees didn't vote for Cuomo, at least I hope not. If any did vote for him well, that's the consequences of their vote and I can't feel too sorry for them, they should have known.

??

Remington is not cutting out production, only winding down a location.

And btw, a lot of Glocks are made in USA. Only reason you can buy a G42, for most recent example.

And not all Beretta's are made in Italy.  :)

I don’t see that when I look around. I have a pretty substantial gun collection and the only foreign gun I have is a MN that was given to me by a friend. I don’t buy foreign guns; I don’t need to.

I don't think they are up and running yet in Huntsville.  There are only about 40-50 cars in their parking lot daily.  I drive by it twice a day.

I'm not positive this is directly related to the gun industry leaving NY for more friendly states but...  About every channel I watch I've seen commercials begging business to relocate to NY and offering 10 year tax exemptions. Those commercials got to be expensive and they must be desperate. Haven't seen the elitists commercials with Arnold lately begging people to move to Kalifornia lately. Could there possibly be a connection :ugh:

Oh there's a big catch to it... or should I say a lot of catches to it:

Years ago the county I lived in tried a similar approach; no property taxes for a year.  There was a manufactured home company that moved into an abandoned paper mill.  They stayed there for one year then pulled everything out during the night.  Must have been sticker shock. Oh well, at least they created jobs for one year.
