interesting video on WWII exploding bullets used by snipers

As far as I can tell, it stinks to get shot, hit with shrapnel, or otherwise have your body tissue displaced by foreign objects.  It would double stink to get shot broadside by exploding ordinance.  sheesh.  If you don't pass out immediately - just enough time to think. "Well, that about does it."

Good vid, I had heard of these but it was because someone had tried to use a kinetic bullet puller on one and it had gone off.

I have never read about this exploding ammo. It looks devastating. Imagine if they had used those in an MG42. Or maybe they did.

Wasn't Simo Haya shot with that type round?

So they say.  Messed up his jaw.  I bet he talked funny after that.

I have read the books that triggered this experiment mentioned at the end of the video.
Ordinance is still being used in fifty cal today.

Try this link:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Explosive_Incendiary/Armor_Piercing_Ammunition

A fairly common .50 BMG round was .50 APIT (Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer)  The stuff would show up in VN once in a while for grunts.  Quad 50 units got a lot of it.  On our Brigade HQ LZ, we had two Quad 50s and two 40MM Pom Pom Dusters.  They could put on quite a show at night.

The results do not surprise me. Velocity of the round versus velocity of the explosive would dictate its effectiveness in the tissue. It would certainly suck to be shot, but it would suck more to get hit by one of these. I thought that it was interesting the Hitler allowed it to be used against the Russians but not the western allies.
