Bargain 3.5" folding knife for <$5

Was at WalMart a couple of days ago and picked up a Sheffielf 3.5 inch folding knife (6043) for $5. I'm not a big knife guy, but having never owned this type of knife, I figured it's gotta be worth at least that price.

Again, not a big knife guy, but it certainly seems like a decent tool. Took a moment to figure out how to close it… am used to lock blade release being on the back, not under the blade. It won't fall open, but once starting it with just the thumb it will easily flick open with a solid click. The blade is smooth and clean with a decent edge. It will cut paper with just its weight and a bit of forward movement.

Of course at this price it is made in China. Company's web site is sheffield-tools.com. I'm guessing this is a model made just for WalMart as it's not listed on their web site.

Turns out I coulda saved money buying the knife online with in-store pickup. It's listed at $3.86 here:

It's not gonna win any pretty contests, but for the money I'm happy with the purchase.

there is another thread here that will allow you to become a knife guy!

Not for 5 bucks :)

BTW... this is a very good knife that Walmart sells for a reasonable price. I own the stainless handle version that's more expensive. Ken onion IS a knife guy.

By my calculation he could buy 28 of these for the price of one of those......but these don't have a button.  :pleased:

Ever heard of a Jennings pistol?

My guess it that it won't hold an edge very long. But, it's hard to be disappointed in a $5 knife.

Will it pass thru a metal detector?

I doubt it. It's "stainless steel". Can't imagine it being even the lowest level of cutlery grade steel for that price. I'm sure Wally World got some volume pricing.

With that said though, It's hard to call it a bad deal if OP gets satisfactory use out of it for the price. Makes a lot more sense than me opening cardboard boxes with an Elmax blade :). What's the best stuff to get shipping tape off a $200 knife? :)

Isn't that the one you can crumble in your hand if you squeeze hard enough?

To the OP: It's hard to fault a $5 knife. You could afford to stash those around and not worry about them.

If it does what you need it to do, and doesn't die before you feel like you got your money's worth, then it's all good. Chances are, you won't be handing it down to your grandson, but so what.

As a disposable tool, these have a use.  I usually carry a work knife and a quality knife.  Each has its purpose.

Several weeks ago I thought I had lost a ProTech knife and drove back to be certain it hadn't been left in a hotel  room.  If it had been a cheap knife from china I wouldn't have spent the time to look for it.

I read this thread earlier today. About 5 minutes ago, one of the guys who works for me in the evening comes up and starts talking. About a minute or two into the conversation he says "Hey! Check out this knife I got for $5!" He pulls it out as I was thinking "That's two $5 knives I've heard about in a day", then I turn around and danged if it wasn't the same knife!  I may go pick me up a couple just to throw in the glove boxes of our vehicles. Seem to be pretty sturdy, especially for 5 bucks.

For a 5 buck knife it's hard to beat it. Something you can use and abuse and not feel bad about destroying it.

Exactly.

I've got a cheap knife in the console in both cars, bikes, first aid kits, tool boxes, etc. None of them are particularly nice but if I get in a jam and need a knife, they'll work and I won't care if I bugger them.

I used to carry a 5 dollar knife for work.  Aside from it needing to be sharpened about every day it was workable.

My daily driver now is a Kershaw.  It is a 30 dollar knife. Holds an edge for about a week.

Mike got my point on buying this knife… as did PeeJ. I'm thinking this will be a good knife to throw in the console of each car. Also my most frequent use for a knife, apart from food, is cutting boxes.

The knives that will pass to my daughter are most likely the ones that my grandfather gave me. Those are priceless!

I bought a Klein (electric tool manufacturer) folding knife as a daily work knife.
I will put that steel blade against any 400 dollar knife.

Surgically sharp, keeps an edge for a long time and sharpens easily and well with a diamond whetstone.
Fits well in pocket with a clip.

I'm actually getting rid of all my buck knives and standardizing on these just for the utilitarian aspect.

Here's my $0.02...

Generally bigger and heavier than I expected. Not razor sharp, but sharp enough for most things. I haven't tried to sharpen it. The flipper doesn't do much other than open it about 1/2" so it does need to be pushed open. Might loosen up with use, and maybe I'm used to my Kershaw. Fasteners seem good enough and the blade is centered in the body pretty well. Looks to be completely metal.

All in all, a perfectly fine knife to be used and abused or tossed in a toolbox. $5 well spent.

I have several expensive knives and like the fancy steels, but I've really laid off buying knives since I found the Sanrenmu line. As I understand it, they made the Spyderco Byrd line. The SRM-763 is by far my favorite, but I think they quit making it with their version of the axis lock. The 710 is quite good for the cost as well. I believe the steel is close to 440, but they actually hold an edge for an economy blade. The tang on the 763 doubles as a bottle opener.
