a guy that works for my dad just brought in a rifle this morning that looks to be an old German WW2 rifle, it appears to have the nazi stamps on it and everything. it is very old and it was brought back from the war by his grandfather who served our country he said. i am not very knowledgeable on the old stuff, i am a new school gun guy (only 29 years old). i am needing some local help around Rutherford County with identifying exactly what this weapon is and if it is truly authentic. i have no reason to believe it wouldnt be, but nonetheless i want to help my friend out. if someone would contact me via PM i would love to exchange numbers and arrange a meet so they could help us on this. i will say it is a very eerie feeling holding this gun. seems legit but i dont know just hit me up.

There's tons of info and pictures online to help identify and authenticate all sorts of guns.  If you take clear, close-up pictures of all the markings and note exactly where they are on the rifle, you can usually determine a surprising amount of detail.   I'd love to see some pics of it.  :)

The most common rifle is a K98 Mauser.

If you post a few pics, I expect we can have it identified in a matter of minutes.

Good looking 98. They are a lot of fun to shoot but be careful w/ imported ammo, a lot of the older stuff is corrosive.

Yep, a nazi marked K98.  Cool old rifle.  The wood looks to be in pretty good shape but the metal is kinda rough.  As for value, I'd just surf gunbroker, armslist, etc. and look for similar rifles.  I'd say $300 range.  Maybe a little more since I assume it doesn't have an import mark.

The rifle was made by J.P. Sauer & Sohn of Suhl, Germany in 1943.  That's what the ce and 43 indicate on top of the receiver.  The Germans stamped the serial number all over the gun.  If they all match that is good.  The receiver serial number is what you see in the 2nd pic.

It's worth way more than $300 in my opinion but I'm not in the business of buying and selling the things.

handle that rust but do it right, and after that, keep it lightly oiled so it don't come back.   Be sure to clean the inside too -- barrel and chamber.  Or if feeling extra productive take it apart and give it a deep cleaning -- they are not complex machines, and you can find out online how to take it down far enough to clean and check for rust.

Post again on gunboards.  Someone can give you an idea but all matched helps the value.  The made many, many millions of the things and the value is going to be hundreds, not thousands.  Keep it, pass it on down the family, forget about "value".
