No Beer on Election Day?

Recommended Posts

No alcohol sales on election day is pretty normal, from what I've seen. They want you full cognizant when you hold your nose to vote.

It's done by local ordinance only, not a state law.

As I understand it, if jurisdiction allows liquor sales at all, then all alcohol sales including beer, cannot be regulated by local ordinance any more? Or at least regarding the election day thang.

They at least oughta allow you to get drunk AFTER you vote....

I don't drink any more, but admit I feel a special tug on election days any more BEFORE I get to poll. Part of the "hold your nose and vote against the worst" thang.

I've never seen that before. Good thing I have homebrew on draft.

Used to be damn near universal around the state back when. I believe it harkens all the way back to the Boss Tweed era, when local ward heelers would supply booze for votes. Probably Jim Crowish influence in the South, too.

No alcohol sales on election day used to be law here(cumberland co) many years ago, but has since been done away with...kinda of a stupid law, like you cant buy alcohol the night before and still vote while drunk as a skunk

It's ok to drink they night before. Nobody votes with a hangover;)

They just don't want you accidentally selecting an honorable candidate at the pole because you were slightly buzzed.

Here, perhaps. I was speaking in general. IIRC Missouri was state wide, but I could be wrong.

It's from way back in the day, not because of where the polls were, but because the people running for election would buy everyone drinks and get them lubed up so they would vote for them.

<edit> I just did some checking and I guess it used to be so bad that some places passed an ordinance banning the sale of liquor up to a week in advance of an election.

Was a staple in many western movies for a plot line too.

Can't have people drinking beer and voting on the same day.

I can't think of a better way to wash that sour taste out of my mouth. I dislike politicians in general and a lot specifically, regardless of what letter they wear after their name.
