I hope to go sit in a stand for at least a couple hours Saturday morning anyway. I know you guys are ready.

Brother, I guess I'm about as ready as I can be. My Flintlocks are good to go! Good luck to all of you!

Can't go opening weekend!  Will be out the following though and then right into rifle.  (Need to sell an AR to help cover 14 days of hunting)

Where ya going hunting?

I just got a muzzle loader and got it sighted in last weekend.  My only problem is trying to get my FIL out with me, he has plans but i'm trying to twist his arm so to speak :)  First time hunting with a ML, should be fun.

Got the old TC Hawken .45 ready to rumble.  Iron sights are minute-of-pie plate at 100 using crossed shooting sticks.  Gun's likely much more accurate than that, and if I ran it from the bench it would probably surprise me.

Shooting the smoke pole is one of my favorite things, and my favorite style of hunting. I just really like the simplicity of the whole matter.

I recently acquired a New England break style .45.  It's been a fiasco getting everything ready.  First I couldn't find ammo for it.  Then I went to sight it in on Saturday and realized that I had left my power at home ,45 minutes away, after selling a buddy half the bottle that I bought.  Was supposed to sight in today but my buddy had to work late, plan is to do it tomorrow.  With any luck I'll have more luck after the season starts then I've had getting ready for the season.

You guys using the old traditional stuff are a way better shot than me! Give me my inline with a good scope. Edited by reed1285

Well, I was really hoping to be hitting the woods with a new .62 Fusil de Chasse this weekend, but it looks like it'll be next year :'(
The old .54 well get another run out instead!IMG_20131104_141441_zps585ddd3c.jpg

Ain't nothing more fun than an iron sighted charcoal burner.  Get to connect just for a moment with really old school hunting.

Couldn't agree more, Homie ;)
I've pretty well done away with all my scoped rifles this year (the Savage 99, however, is going nowhere!) simply because;
A) irons are plenty for the calibers/distances I typically hunt &
B) It just feels waaaay cooler getting up close & personal.
That's why I hunt strictly primitive archery too!

Alas, after surgery on each wrist, one elbow and a shoulder, I'm stuck with a crossbow for archery....can't even draw a compound, much less a longbow.  I'd try it, but the deer would have to die from laughing at me.  Smokepole is as close as I'll ever get to the old ways.  It'll just have to be Natty Bumppo's killdeer for me.

I shot my old-school and my inline yesterday. Fun!

I love shooting them, but the cleanup reminded me why I don't do it more often.

Ready for Saturday!

The truck is packed, now for the longest work day ever :)

After work I'll pick up my FIL (MIL will have dinner ready woohoo) then drive to the cabin so we can be out in the woods 30min before sunrise.  Can't wait.  Don't know if it's a good sign or not, but the wife dreamt I got two deer this weekend :)

Loading the truck up now.  About to head to Wilson County and do a little scouting and decide where I want to hunt in the morning.  Good luck everyone!
