Turkey shoot this Saturday in Lebanon

Recommended Posts

Posted

If anyone is interested there's a turkey shoot this Saturday in Lebanon at the Wilson County Fairgrounds. 8am-2pm

They'll have turkey, country ham, and bacon rounds, maybe even a money shoot or two. Come out and try your skill.

Proceeds go toward restoration of the 7th TN Flag. The flag was the very first battle flag used by the 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment at the beginning of the War Between the States. Six of the ten companies forming the 7th TN were from Wilson County and were mustered into service July 1861. Lebanon’s own Brigadier General Robert H. Hatton was the commander.

The flag is currently in storage at the Tennessee State Museum. A 1960s restoration of this flag, which encased it in rough nylon netting sewn tightly by machine, is gradually tearing the flag apart. The conservation treatment will consist of removing this netting stitch by stitch and framing the flag for display. The General Robert H. Hatton Camp has committed to take the lead in raising $22,000 for the restoration of this flag.

The 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment served as part of the Tennessee Brigade which operated as part of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. The 7th TN had a long history of courage and determination as evidenced by its participation in every major battle in which the Army of Northern Virginia fought including part of Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg. By April 2, 1865, the entire brigade consisted of only 860 men and 87 officers. Of these, the 7th Tennessee had only 134 survivors remaining in the regiment. The 7th Tennessee would continue to fight bravely right up until the surrender of the Army of Virginia at Appomattox.

Last time I went to one of those I was only allowed to shoot once and won a Country Ham but was asked to leave. I asked if I could just put my gun up and watch and the guy said yea but when your watching folks shoot and the hair on the back of you neck keeps standing up from folks looking at you, you figure it's time to leave. I went there and met my little brother there cause he shot at this one in Greenbrier Fire Department Turkey shoot often. I told him to see if he could find out why I was asked to leave. He told me later that it is seldom that a shooter shoots a gun at the paper target and it cuts the center out of the target and cuts the target stick in half.

He said that indicates a Sleeved gun and they are illegal at Turkey Shoots. Well since I use to shoot turkey shoots up north at gun clubs but we shot clay pigeons coming out of trap houses it was a different situation. But with that said I was not using my  clay bird gun either. I was using a gun I got from my older brother in a trade for an old hump back Browning semi auto I had he wanted. It was a gun made in Brazil and was a 12 gauge 2 3/4- 3 in chamber O/U 30" F&F duck gun. Until that day I had never fired the gun and had no clue what kind of pattern it shot.

Later on that Fall when duck season opened up I was invited to go duck hunting with a few friends and I took that O/U and bought 1 box of 3 inch and had a box of 2 3/4 HB# 4 shot. I was knocking down ducks with the #4 shot rounds that the other guys were having trouble reaching with 3 inch magnums. After the day was over I think I bagged about 11 ducks of assorted breeds and everyone got birds but I had this one buddy that walked up to me and asked if I would sell the gun. I mean this was a beautiful O/U all engraved with really beautiful wood, gold trigger with select safety to choose which barrel you could fire.

In all honesty I have never been into pretty guns but more into guns I don't mind scratching or using without worrying about them. He was a buddy and a metro Police officer and at first I stumbled about throwing an answer out and he said I will give you $900.00 cash for the gun. I shudder a second and he went to a grand and I handed him the gun but I was going to hand it to him on $900.00.

I didn't really have anything in the gun. My brother gave me the gun and $300.00 for the Browning Humpback that I had $150.00 in. I spoke to him about a year or so ago at a pawn shop that a mutual friend of ours owns and he still has that gun and shoots it every duck season and I think we made that deal back in I want to say 87 or 88. I had to laugh when he told me he took it the a Police Department Fund Raiser Turkey shoot for Toys for Tots and was disqualified and had to go home and get a different gun and come back. I said yea i should have warned you about that................   We had a good laugh over that. That was the 1st and only time going to a meat shoot down here........

Not wanting to be sarcastic but why is it called a turkey shoot if it does not involve turkeys? Never heard of such a thing. But then I was born and raised in the Midwest.

Some targets look like a turkey, turkeys are the prize as well as other things.

The rules are pretty open. 12ga and under, 36" bbl. and under. Ammo is provided. Closest pellet to the center cross on the target wins.

Roger, so I can bring something with a choke installed? Reason I ask is because the way I see it, if everyone had the same firearm, the results would be luck.

They try to keep all the things on the same line, so it is more luck.

Ive got a Huglu side by side that I picked up for this purpose. I haven't had a chance to attend one yet with it but wondered if the over under with full chokes would be better

I'd say it's a bit of skill and luck. Some guns pattern better than others so knowing where your particular gun patterns would be helpful.

We try and make this a fun event for everyone. There will potentially be 8 year olds with .410s shooting alongside everyone else, men, women, girls... and I've seen the .410 win. It's a great cause, should be great fun and maybe you can bring home the bacon too! There hasn't been a turkey shoot in Lebanon in quite a while to my knowledge, so we're hoping to revive a fun event for the cause.

My little brother shoots an old Winchester single barrel that was passed down through the family from my grandfather and he does win quite often and the gun has been checked for being sleeved and it has been confirmed that it is a factory untouched barrel. Gun holds a fairly tight pattern and is a 32 inch full choke 2 3/4 chamber. All of the shoots he attends only allow a winner to win 3 times per shoot. He wins a turkey, a canned or country ham and then either a slab of uncut country bacon or a butchers block 5lb tube of bologna.........

It's a cheaters gun at turkey shoots but what it is, is a gun that a gun smith or a really good guy with guns will insert a sleeve into the barrel from the end of the chamber to the end of the barrel and it is so thin it is almost undetectable to the naked eye but it is designed to make the gun shoot a really tighter pattern than normal full choke barrels. That is what they thought my O/U had been done to it. I did find out later that the barrels were untouched and that is how they came from the factory and it was a fluke gun or freak gun , how ever you look at it but it was a darn good duck gun for sure and turkey shoot gun to for 1 round.............

Cool. Never heard of that before. I want one now though.  :pleased:

Believe me you will get caught at any turkey shoots with one cause those guys don't mess around. My gun was not even sleeved and I was asked to leave and you really don't argue with them to much with that many other guys with guns. They make great duck guns but don't ever make the mistake of firing a slug out of one. It will banana peel the end of the barrel and possibly hurt someone..........jmho

I do fairly good at turkey shoots; inevitably someone always wants to check my gun. It is always legit. I guess I am just lucky.

It's really to bad you can't trust folks nowadays. It would irk me if my gun had to be checked because I won but I would bet they see lots of cheaters.

I just laughed....but I see your point.

Our last turkey shoot of the year is on schedule for Saturday at the Wilson county fairgrounds. We had a great time last month with lots of excited winners including these two youngsters. If you haven't taken you son, or daughter to a good old fashioned turkey shoot don't miss out. There's not a bigger grin to be had.

8am-2pm at the Wilson county fairgrounds, $5 rounds with country hams, thick sliced bacon and frozen turkeys. Should be a nice day so come on out.
