The Tennesseean (Or, Brian Haas et al have left the building)

The Tennessean is a liberal rag in an area where the target market of those that buy newspapers is probably mostly conservative. It’s a shame that it’s the areas only daily newspaper.

Very few print newspapers are worth the time to read these days.  The Tennessean isn't on that list and quite frankly, I haven't see any paper owned by Gannett Company that is.

I agree. I hate that Brian Haas is a victim of this bull.

I think survivors of these messes sometimes leave out of sheer protest. I really enjoyed Brian's reporting and especially its fairness. But, I can't say I blame him for going.

Thanks for gathering views from every side - even the side that is against us - because that is the fair thing to do. Hopefully you'll stick around and participate in the fun post-Tennesseean. :)

It would be nice to see a more conservative-biased or even Liberterian paper come onto the scene and put The Tennessean out of business entirely, but the day and age of the physical newspaper is seriously drawing to an end.

yep.  And even in troubled times, some papers seem to toss a match into the back-seat trash as they mash the bus accelerator over the cliff.

An amazing management scene & story that they have set in place.  I seem to recall other Gannett organizations recently self-destructing in a similar manner. I would hate to be a stock holder.

I haven't had a use for The Tennesseean or The Commercial Appeal for years as I don't have a bird cage anymore.

I would like Brian to at least check in sometime and let us know how he is doing.  Hopefully is he able to find something he wants.

We have had a "deal" with them for several years where the Sunday paper was all we paid for, and the daily was dropped off at no charge. And it was their suggestion, we didn't want it, and told them so.

I always thought that was a way to boost circulation number for them.

Only thing this paper has been good for is coupons for the wife. And we quit that months ago.
I'm not even sure the last time I bought a paper. Know she will be getting the Tennessean on Thanksgiving though to look at ads.

Regardless, good for some of these people to be moving on to better positions.

good for them! glad they've moved on to bigger and better tings... as for news papers... ya i haven't bought one in years... some lady tried selling the DNJ to me while i was walking into walmart one day...i told her, why would i buy the news paper when it's online for free... :hat:  and then walked in the store

One of our local papers did a lay off a couple years ago.  One of the reporters that got laid off started his own online(only) newspaper.  He sold volunteer subscriptions and as word got out was able to start selling advertisements.  His online paper in my opinion is more popular then the one that laid him off.  They lost a great person when they let him go and created more competition for themselves.

Hey guys!

I'm still around and definitely no "victim" in this case (I'm not a fan of that label even if I were one). As someone else has pointed out, I am indeed now Public Information Officer for the Nashville Fire Department.

It was a good move for me and I'm excited to be here. The timing was right, the job was right and I'm already really enjoying it.

(And, for the record, our chief at the department is an avid shooter!)

-Brian

EDIT: I forgot to mention the only downside of this job so far... I had to shave the tactical beard.

Shed a tear for a beard.

This!   The chattanooga liberal press or whatever it is called now sent some poor sap to my door not long ago, begging me to sign up for the paper.  I asked why I would want to pay money for biased 2 day old news that I can get for free in near-real-time on the web.   Only thing worth reading in ours is the comics, and only reason to buy one is for coupons if you can find more savings than the value of the paper which is getting tougher as the price of papers is up and the value of coupons is meh.

I am not kidding about the 2 day lag.  We have the paper at work, and I have on multiple occasions seen 1-2 day old news on the front page as if it just happened.   I get there is a 1/2 day printing delay but some of their stories are over 48 hours old.    This is becoming common -- an older friend buys us the reader's digest and 9/10 of the articles in it are things I saw on the web months ago.

Gosh it is scary as I try and remember when it was the last time I purchased a newspaper. I think it was back when the Nashville Banner was still in print.................
